Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Project Engineer for the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) within the School of Engineering. Reporting to the Director of the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT) and working independently with clearly defined objectives, the Research Project Engineer will lead the technical development team and will act as a liaison between CAIT and transit clients, lead the joint efforts to ensure system reliability and scalability, and serve as the primary technical authority throughout the project lifecycle. This is a high‑impact role with cross‑unit visibility at CAIT and its transit clients. It is ideal for a hands‑on engineer with a solid foundation in supply chain systems and related technologies and a strong desire to evolve into a leadership role in complex program delivery and maintenance systems. It is expected that through the activities at the center, the individual becomes recognized nationally as a subject matter expert, able to provide direction on transportation systems, and act as a consultant to industry, state DOTs, research institutions, and academia.

Key Responsibilities

Provide resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems that may require significant professional and research experience and great creativity.

Act as a point of contact and subject matter expert for both internal and external constituents.

Takes leadership over research projects, recognize and resolve problems with robust and clear views.

Lead and direct resources, maintaining focus on project goals, as well as act as a point of contact and subject matter expert on transportation systems.

Initiate and manage the development of cutting‑edge advanced protocols.

Manage staff and students working on transportation research projects.

Handle the report and proposal writing.

Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) to develop original research plans, schedules, and protocols to ensure the successful completion of assigned projects.

Implement appropriate methodologies while directly or matrix managing project teams conducting the research.

Write technical reports, journal article submissions, and prepare conference presentations.

Represent the Center at seminars and conferences.

Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in Industrial or Civil Engineering, Systems Engineering, Supply Chain, or a related field and 5+ years of experience in supply chain engineering, inventory management, or operations research.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Proven success in leading complex cross‑functional initiatives or large system rollouts.

Proven experience with enterprise systems for supply chain management, inventory tracking, or maintenance operations (e.g., Oracle, Maximo, Trapeze).

Strong working knowledge of inventory optimization, MRP/ERP systems, and data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).

Excellent organizational, communication, problem‑solving, and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in industrial or civil engineering, Systems Engineering, Supply Chain, or a related field.

Familiarity with transit and public transportation systems.

Experience with cloud‑based architecture (e.g., AWS) and integration of IoT or predictive maintenance technologies.

Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in a structured engineering environment.

Special Conditions Candidate must be able to perform the physical activities required by the position, which may include moving and lifting heavy materials.

Work Arrangement Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program effective September 1, 2022 through January 31, 2026. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date.
