Job Overview The Lead Laborer is the custodial crew leader and oversees teams of senior custodians, student employees and seasonal workers across UCSB campus dining facilities. The role manages daily work assignments, quality control, safety, employee training, building security, special projects, emergency response, and customer service. The position supports the University’s Educational Equity Plan and promotes a diverse and collaborative workplace.

Responsibilities & Duties

Leadership and Communication (30%)

Direct staff work and provide performance feedback.

Assist managers with annual goal setting and performance assessments.

Conduct team meetings on safety, training, policies and customer service.

Delegate tasks and motivate the crew toward daily and project goals.

Report attendance and safety incidents to management.

Technical Operations (35%)

Perform custodial tasks: dusting, sweeping, mopping, polishing, and floor maintenance.

Operate vacuum cleaners, wet/dry vacuums, floor scrubbers, and buffers.

Maintain and repair cleaning equipment; assist with furniture setup for events.

Inspect work areas and correct discrepancies immediately.

Assist with special heavy‑duty kitchen cleans and other administrative duties.

Customer Service (20%)

Ensure cleanliness and satisfaction within assigned areas.

Respond to service issues and coordinate with building occupants and other departments.

Collect and act on customer feedback; schedule manager requests.

Maintain positive workplace relations across campus.

Special Projects & Emergency Response (10%)

Coordinate special projects including floor work, minor renovations and construction clean‑ups.

Process related paperwork and ensure the use of quality standards.

Participate in emergency response and cleanup operations.

Safety & Security (5%)

Maintain awareness of hazards and enforce safety protocols daily.

Provide safety training to crew; report accidents.

Assist with building lock‑up and unlock duties as needed.

Qualifications

Required:

3+ years of custodial or maintenance work in institutional or commercial settings.

Preferred:

High school diploma.

Physical ability to lift up to 50 lb and stand for 8 hrs per shift.

Special Conditions

Satisfactory criminal history / background check.

No visa sponsorship available.
