Senior Traffic Engineer
Join HDR and help shape the transportation systems that move people and goods safely and sustainably.
Primary Responsibilities
Lead the design of traffic engineering projects for clients in New England and nationwide, ensuring safety and meeting regulatory standards.
Develop traffic models, studies, and reports; generate traffic impact studies, capacity analyses, and signal design/control plans.
Collaborate with civil engineering and traffic planning teams across projects.
Present findings and technical solutions to clients such as MassDOT, MBTA, NHDOT, RIDOT, and the City of Boston.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification
Road Safety Professional (RSP) certification
Proficiency with Synchro / SimTraffic, PTV Vissim, and AutoCAD Civil 3D
Experience with MassDOT, CTDOT, RIDOT, MBTA, and Massachusetts municipalities
Project management and lead traffic engineering experience
Local candidates preferred
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field.
Minimum 10 years of experience in ITS and traffic engineering for urban and rural highways, interchanges, and intersections.
Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license recognized in the placement location.
Knowledge of state and federal transportation regulations.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and traffic engineering software (HCS, CORSIM, Synchro, SIM Traffic).
Strong oral and written communication, presentation, and teamwork skills.

Compensation & Benefits Salary ranges: Boston, MA – $139,524 – $199,320; Providence, RI – $122,084 – $174,405; Rocky Hill, CT – $127,897 – $182,710.
