Job Overview Proctors have an integral role in the Senate Page Program with specific responsibility for the residence life of young, impressionable Senate Pages. Proctors ensure that Webster Hall, the Senate Page Residence, remains an enriching, safe, and structured environment. They supervise pages and enforce the Page Program code of conduct and guidelines, respond to page misconduct, plan and supervise field trips and activities, and coordinate and procure meals for pages. Proctors act in loco parentis for page medical appointments and respond to emergencies when on‑duty and on‑call. They also perform office administrative tasks including answering department phone lines, taking messages, and responding to emails. The role is a live‑in position with assigned shift work and on‑call responsibilities.
Key Accountabilities / Essential Job Duties
Administrative duties; create and update program templates and official documents; answer phone calls (24/7 line) and email inquiries promptly; oversee the facility while on shift and submit work orders and maintenance requests; participate in meetings and walkthroughs with AOC; order facility and office supplies.
Participate in trainings, staff meetings, and professional development courses; oversee the office in an EA role while on shift.
Support in loco parentis responsibility of adolescent Senate pages; account for pages’ whereabouts; manage digital platform to track locations, free‑time checkouts, and travel; provide guidance, counsel, emotional support, and conflict resolution.
Provide medical first aid and emergency response; accompany pages for medical appointments or treatment; dispense prescribed controlled substances.
Enforce code of conduct and other program policies; conduct room inspections; assign demerits and merits and consequences for infractions; support director and deputy director in disciplinary investigations.
Coordinate meal logistics: order and supervise evening and weekend meals; purchase groceries; track gift cards for weekend page meals.
Plan and supervise field trips and activities for educational, social, recreational, and cultural enrichment; execute and plan events such as move‑in/move‑out, movie nights, and spontaneous events; lead activities and deliver information to pages at weekly meetings.
Other duties as assigned.
Job Specifications Required Education Bachelor’s Degree.
Required Work Experience
1–3 years of experience working with student populations or in‑residence halls.
Required Special Skills / Knowledge
Training in Emergency Response; Mandatory Reporting; CPR Certification.
As part of our hiring process, we may conduct a skills assessment to better understand an applicant’s proficiency in key areas relevant to the role.
Desired Qualifications The proctor role is non‑partisan, and candidates must be able to maintain efficient communication on a team of eight page program staff, with Senate pages, and with our partners in the Senate Page School, party cloakrooms, and other Senate offices.
Quality candidates have strong residence life experience working with adolescent or college age student populations.
Proctors must be able to complete tasks independently while also being a member of a team that works collaboratively on planning and scheduling page program events, field trips, and other functions.
Proctors must complete daily tasks while on shift to ensure work is completed for their own success and for the success of the following staff members. Successful proctors must be altruistic, highly responsible, and have strong initiative and drive. They must model appropriate behavior for pages.
Working Conditions
Position requires onsite presence in support of the U.S. Senate when in session; employee must be available and prepared to work during government shutdowns, inclement weather, holidays, late night, overnight, and weekend sessions. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.
Work outside regular work hours (evenings, weekends & holidays).
Ability to lift objects up to 25 lbs.
Moderate activity; biohazard exposure.
