The Role and the Team As a Senior Sales Engineer working with accounts in the SLED space, you will be a trusted advisor to Account Managers and our current and future customers. You will serve as a technical liaison and subject‑matter expert on all things Proofpoint, delivering People‑Centric solutions that protect against today’s cyber threats.
This role focuses on State and Local Government and Education accounts primarily in the Eastern U.S. Very strong preference for candidates located in the Eastern U.S. time zone.
Serve as the technical lead for the Proofpoint pre‑sales process.
Collaborate with the sales team to develop and execute account penetration strategies.
Build trust and rapport with customers and prospects, acting as their main technical point of contact.
Deliver compelling product demonstrations addressing pressing cyber threats.
Work closely with customer security staff for technical discovery, planning, execution, and wrap‑up of Proof‑of‑Concept (POC) and Production Evaluations.
Design and champion complex People‑Centric Security solutions across the Proofpoint portfolio.
Assist in professional services deployments, technical training, and present at industry seminars or trade shows as needed.
Provide customer insight to Product Management, Marketing, and Product Development teams to enhance solutions.
Become an expert in Email Security Gateways, Advanced Persistent Threats, Attack Protection, Threat Response, Data Loss Prevention (DLP), and the threat landscape.
Senior Level Duties
Mentor new team members in Proofpoint products, sales process, and relationship management.
Develop and deliver training presentations to peers, account managers, and other teams within Proofpoint.
Contribute to corporate communications, internal documentation, and training materials.
Help develop solutions to common challenges and establish processes within the local team and across the sales engineering organization.
Job Requirements
6+ years of hands‑on technical experience in sales/engineering, technical account management, or senior level cybersecurity support.
Proven track record of developing and maintaining customer relationships through in‑person meetings, ideally in a local territory.
Experience working with large (Enterprise) clients/organizations.
Self‑starter who owns and drives initiatives.
History of conducting large‑scale assessments and/or evaluations with complex systems and teams.
Comfortable presenting to technical staff and C‑suite executives.
Experience in Enterprise or Cloud Security, including cloud/SaaS platforms, messaging, data, network, endpoint, NOC/SOC, or MSP cybersecurity.
Experience selling and positioning a platform is highly valued.
Exposure to at least two of the following skill sets: Cloud security and shadow IT monitoring; IT security, vulnerability or risk assessments, and policy enforcement; Data Loss Prevention (DLP), compliance and privacy; Enterprise email solutions such as Exchange, G‑Suite, Lotus Domino, working knowledge of SMTP.
Additional bonuses: Directory Services (AD, Azure AD, LDAP, iDP); Email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC); Networking protocols (SMTP, DNS, LDAP, HTTP, etc.); Experience with MITRE or NIST frameworks.
Background in consultative problem‑solving or strong desire to pivot to a sales direction.
Thrives in a fast‑paced, high‑energy environment; works independently, adapts quickly, and maintains a positive attitude.
Strong PowerPoint, presentation, and organizational skills are a must.
CISSP or other relevant cybersecurity and/or cloud security certifications are valued.
Bachelor’s or advanced degree in a relevant field, or equivalent experience.
Travel is required.
