Director of Business Development
The purpose of the Director of Business Development is to help the company achieve its sales goals by acquiring new, profitable contracts and by working with the Vice President of Construction to accomplish the overall goals of the company sales plan.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Develops strategies to identify targets of opportunity by:
Forecasting expected market trends and analyzing potential impact on company position in the market.
Investigating and recommending new market opportunities and preparing action plans to take advantage of such opportunities, including how to mold the market’s perception of the company as a preferred provider of services.
Analyzing risks of proposed projects to owner, which include contractual and performance requirements as well as the level of competition.
Taking a strategic view of the value that each proposed project brings to the company as well as the available resources needed to complete each project.
Working together with the chief (senior) estimator and company management in identifying, proposing, and contracting for new work opportunities that are consistent with the overall company goals.
Enhances the marketing of the company’s brand and services by:
Working with the Estimator and VP of Construction in preparing the most persuasive and effective proposals to present the strengths, advantages, operational processes and record of success in such a way as to influence clients to select the company as their preferred provider of services.
Managing the development of a Customer Relationship Management system and overseeing its operation.
Implementing the marketing, advertising, and informational campaigns that increase the company’s stature and visibility in the marketplace.
Directing the internal preparation of a complete portfolio of project photos, personnel resumes, completed project descriptions, and descriptions of special company programs and processes for use in proposals and marketing information.
Strategically utilizing professional associations, trade groups, community organizations, and the like, to build personal networks of influence that enhance recognition of the company.
Developing relationships with design consultants that lead to referral of the company to potential clients and identifying design consultants and other consultants who represent strategic partners for design-build contracts.
Developing fruitful and productive relationships with potential and existing clients that lead to the selection of the company as the preferred provider of services.
Understanding the client’s overall program and being able to explain (or lead) the client to an understanding of how the company’s services are the best option.
Being open to new tendencies and opportunities in the marketplace.
Builds the company’s internal sales and marketing strength by:
Working in cooperation with fellow members of the management team and employees to engage them daily to submit ideas for representing and positioning the company in the marketplace in the most positive way.
Consistently seeking and recommending other company personnel and/or people inside or outside of the industry who have an interest or aptitude for sales and business development.
Making recommendations to the President, Vice President of Construction (and others where applicable) regarding needed skill sets and behavioral competencies for projects that are in the pipelines.
Office Administration Preparing correspondence, copying, faxes, coordinating team meetings, and other general tasks related to Business Development administration.
Qualification Requirements To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Knowledge of commonly used construction concepts, practices, and commercial construction/estimating experience is required. Must be able to read plans and construction documents. Specific experience in retail, medical, and institutional construction estimating and design-build experience is preferred. Working knowledge of Timberline, MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Outlook.
Education and/or Experience Four (4) year college or university degree program (preferably in engineering, construction management, architecture, business or related field); or five (5) to seven (7) years related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Continuing education in marketing, presentation skills, proposal writing, negotiating skills, and any other pertinent skill development courses. Field experience understanding how projects proceed (i.e. working knowledge of projects from start to finish).
Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Mathematical Skills Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, fundamentals of plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Physical Demands The employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. Occasionally the employee is required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally moderate to heavy (25 to 50 lbs). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
