Job Summary The
Registered Nurse (RN) IV Therapy
plays a critical role in delivering safe, high-quality intravenous treatments to patients in an outpatient or ambulatory setting. Serving as both a clinical expert and patient advocate, this role ensures the accurate administration of IV medications, fluids, and infusions while closely monitoring patient responses. The IV Therapy RN conducts patient assessments, provides education on treatment plans and post-therapy care, and collaborates with providers and clinical teams to ensure seamless coordination of services. By promoting patient safety, enhancing the patient experience, and supporting adherence to established protocols, the IV Therapy RN contributes to positive clinical outcomes and the overall quality of care.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive patient assessments prior to initiating IV therapy, including review of medical history, provider orders, and contraindications.
Initiate, monitor, and discontinue intravenous infusions, including fluids, medications, and specialty therapies, in accordance with established clinical protocols and physician orders.
Demonstrate proficiency in venipuncture and IV insertion techniques to ensure patient comfort and safety.
Monitor patients during and after IV therapy for adverse reactions or complications and intervene appropriately.
Provide patient education regarding IV therapy treatments, potential side effects, and post-treatment care instructions.
Accurately document assessments, treatments, patient responses, and outcomes in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Maintain compliance with infection control, safety, regulatory, and organizational standards.
Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure coordinated, high-quality patient care.
Maintain IV therapy equipment, supplies, and a clean, safe clinical environment.
Respond promptly to patient needs, questions, and concerns, promoting a positive and supportive care experience.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives, staff education, and ongoing competency training as required.
Education Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing required
Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
Experience
Minimum of 1-2 years of clinical nursing experience required
Previous experience in IV therapy, infusion services, ambulatory care, emergency department, ICU, or medical-surgical nursing preferred
Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and IV insertion required
Experience administering IV medications, fluids, and infusions in accordance with clinical protocols preferred
Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and clinical documentation standards
Experience working in a fast‑paced clinical environment while maintaining high standards of patient safety and care quality
Licensure & Certifications
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing in the applicable state(s)
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred or required based on department needs
Infusion Therapy Certification (e.g., CRNI®) preferred
Compliance with all required continuing education and organizational credentialing standards
Compensation This position has a hiring range of USD $40.17 - USD $65.31 /Hr.
