COUNTY EMPLOYEES ARE SUBJECT TO THE COUNTY PROMOTIONAL RULE FOR STEP PLACEMENT IN ACCORDANCE WITH COMP ORD 1.3.5.
Future Salary Increases:
June 2026 – 4.2% increase to base pay (3.5% Across-the-Board + 0.7% Market Adjustment)
June 2027 – 3.7% increase to base pay (3% Across-the-Board + 0.7% Market Adjustment)
About the Position The Legal Support Assistant I‑Civil Option is the entry‑level class in the series and is only assigned to the Sheriff's Office. Incumbents assist with legal clerical work while processing a wide variety of legal forms and documents to enforce court orders carried out under the law in civil actions. In this position, incumbents will gain customer service experience while assisting the public, attorneys, litigants, court personnel, and law enforcement officials with civil case inquiries and requests made in person, by phone, and via electronic and written mail.
In addition to the general functions of this class, incumbents will be responsible for cash handling and basic financial accounting to include receiving, verifying, posting, and recording cash, checks, and other payment transmittals.
Ideal Candidate The County of San Diego desires candidates who communicate effectively, hold themselves and others accountable, maintain a high degree of accuracy, are detail‑oriented, have basic cash handling and accounting skills, have a high degree of discretion, demonstrate tact and diplomacy, can prioritize and stay current with technology and trends in their profession.
Hiring Timeline
Tentative Job Offer and Background Process begins shortly after the interview.
Pre‑employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
Anticipated Start Date: Based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.

Education and Experience
One (1) year of full‑time general clerical or secretarial work experience.
Or completion of a legal administrative assistant, legal secretarial, or paralegal program from a recognized community or business college.
Background Must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Felony convictions will be disqualifying. Depending on type, number, severity, and recency, misdemeanor convictions may be disqualifying. Before appointment, candidates will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include a psychological test, truth verification (polygraph), or other examination or test.
Condition of Employment As part of the County of San Diego’s pre‑employment process, prospective candidates will undergo a background check (including fingerprinting) and a pre‑employment medical screening before beginning County employment. Additional types of background investigations may be conducted based on the job‑related activities of the position.
Evaluation Qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information provided on the employment application and supplemental application questionnaire. Please ensure all information is complete and accurate as the responses you provide on the supplemental application questionnaire will be reviewed using an automated evaluation system.
