Nursing Consultant Institutional - Nursing Home Surveyor The Department of Social and Health Services' (DSHS), Home and Community Living Administration (HCLA), is hiring a Nursing Consultant Institutional to serve as a Nursing Home Surveyor.

This position is a Registered Nurse role focused on protecting the health, safety, and well‑being of people living in licensed nursing facilities. In this role, you’ll conduct on‑site surveys and complaint investigations to determine compliance with state and federal nursing home regulations. Your work directly supports licensure and certification decisions and helps ensure residents receive appropriate, safe, and high‑quality care.

This is a field‑based role that requires sound clinical judgment, objectivity, and strong communication skills. Travel is to be expected. You’ll work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, engaging with facility staff, residents, families, and agency partners in professional, often complex situations.

Some of what you will do:

Travel to nursing homes within the assigned region to conduct on‑site full surveys and complaint investigations, which may require consecutive days at a facility.

Plan, organize, and manage inspection workloads and timelines, including preparation, on‑site work, and completion of accurate and timely reports and statements of deficiencies.

Observe resident care, services, and the physical environment to evaluate compliance with applicable regulations.

Conduct interviews with residents, family members, facility staff, and community representatives to gather information about care and services.

Review medical records and other documentation to assess nursing care and service delivery.

Communicate findings with providers throughout the inspection process in a clear, objective, and professional manner.

Collaborate with survey team members and participate in required education, training, and administrative hearings.

Enter required information into state data systems, including inspection timelines, investigation summaries, and findings.

Who should apply?

Associate degree in nursing/diploma nurse AND five years of experience as an RN in a long‑term care setting.

Bachelor of science in nursing AND three years of experience as an RN in a long‑term care setting.

Master of nursing/master of science in nursing AND two years of RN experience in a long‑term care setting.

Note: A valid Washington State license to practice as a registered nurse is required.

Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities we are looking for:

Regulatory and clinical judgment: Applies state and federal requirements to evaluate nursing and long‑term care services using objective, evidence‑based standards.

Skillful communication: Communicates clearly, respectfully, and objectively with residents, families, providers, and agency staff, both verbally and in writing.

Critical thinking: Analyzes complex clinical and operational information to identify deficient practices and determine appropriate findings and recommendations.

Professional conduct under pressure: Maintains professionalism, consistency, and sound judgment in high‑pressure environments, complex investigations, and challenging conversations with residents, providers, and stakeholders.

Documentation and organization: Organizes information and prepares accurate, thorough, and timely written reports using required data systems and technology.

Independent and team‑based work: Works effectively with minimal supervision while contributing as a collaborative and reliable member of a multidisciplinary team.
