CMS is seeking a
Senior Engineer III
to support the growing workload within the High Voltage Design (HVD) Engineering team. This is a newly created role intended to focus on
project engineering and coordination , allowing existing technical staff to concentrate on detailed engineering work. The Senior Engineer III will act as a
project engineer , responsible for guiding projects from concept through construction closeout, ensuring coordination across multiple engineering disciplines and successful execution in the field. The role requires broad engineering knowledge, strong communication skills, and the ability to proactively drive projects forward. Key Responsibilities
Serve as the
project engineer , overseeing projects from initial concept through final closeout. Coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, including:
Protection & Controls / Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Physical substation layout Civil engineering Transmission lines
Ensure alignment between design teams and construction execution. Support protection and controls system design work, including:
Substation protection and control systems Instrumentation and control designs Motor operators, air brakes, and switch controls
Develop and manage project documentation, including:
Design and construction scopes of work Master document lists Design support throughout the construction lifecycle
Provide construction support to ensure successful field implementation. Participate in technical design reviews (preferred but not required). Maintain a cross-functional perspective to ensure all project inputs are accounted for. Drive workflow from planning through execution and final delivery. Team & Project Environment
The HVD Engineering team supports
400–600 projects annually , ranging in size and complexity. The I&C group handles a
subset of these projects , primarily focused on system protection and controls. The team is expanding its role to include increased consulting work while maintaining project engineering responsibilities. Limited involvement in permitting activities. Required Qualifications
5+ years of engineering experience Broad understanding of engineering design workflows and project execution Experience coordinating across multiple engineering disciplines Strong organizational and project management skills Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities Preferred Qualifications
Utility experience
(strongly preferred) Experience with protection and controls systems Prior exposure to substation or high-voltage projects Experience performing or supporting technical design reviews Key Skills & Competencies
