Location: 6100 US Highway 101 N, Eureka, Humboldt County, CA

Salary Range: $4,870.00 – $6,101.00 per month (minimum for new state candidates)

Job Type: Permanent, Full Time – In Office (travel to sites up to 50% of the year with per‑diem support)

Position Overview The incumbent will operate tree‑maintenance equipment, climb trees over 40 feet, perform trimming, pruning, and root work, and apply safety and pesticide protocols. Responsibilities also include equipment maintenance, traffic control, record keeping, and occasional snow‑removal and roadway support functions.

Primary Responsibilities

Climb and trim trees over 40 feet using ropes, spurs, and safety belts; trim/remove limbs and branches.

Operate highway tree‑maintenance machinery (brush chipper, pneumatic & hydraulic tools, aerial equipment). Maintain and service equipment, perform minor repairs, and keep accurate records.

Apply pesticides and herbicides for weed & pest control; perform chemical applications and site sanitation.

Manage traffic control and chain control points during tree work and roadway projects.

Perform brush cutting, weed removal, and brush chip work along right‑of‑way and state facilities.

Occasionally support snow‑removal, striping, stenciling, bridgework, or landscape functions for short durations.

Coordinate with roadside spray crews and maintain safety gear (hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, face shield, gloves, respirator, chaps).

Minimum Qualifications

Class C driver’s license (valid and unrestricted). CDL may be required for certain equipment operations.

One year of tree‑trimming experience on trees over 40 feet, or nine months in a state service tree‑maintenance crew with comparable duties.

Demonstrated ability to climb tall trees, use safety rigging, and perform trimming tasks at height.

Valid drug screening clearance and willingness to comply with state testing requirements.

Strong knowledge of trees, ropes, knots, and safety practices related to tree work.

Additional Qualifications (Desirable)

Experience with specialized equipment such as Category 1 or 2 machinery and heavy‑equipment operation.

Knowledge of pesticide application and safety regulations.

Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights (Dec‑Mar) and special projects.
