Job Overview
CALTRANS Tree Maintenance Worker – support highway tree maintenance, climbing, trimming, cutting, and equipment operation. Works individually or in a crew and performs traffic control and safety duties. Responsibilities
Climb trees >40 ft using ropes, spurs, and safety belts; trim and remove limbs and branches. Operate power hammersaws and hand tools; treat cut surfaces to protect from fungi and insects. Use brush chipper and aerial equipment to remove vegetation and maintain right‑of‑way. Maintain tree climbing and trimming equipment, perform minor repairs, and keep records. Operate Category 1 or 2 equipment with proper licensing; perform traffic control at chain‑control points. Execute chemical weed and pest control per schedule; apply pesticides with safety procedures. Working Conditions
Location: 6100 US Hwy 101 N, Eureka, Humboldt County. Travel up to 50% of the year with per‑diem. Seasonal work schedules: 4/10‑hour days in summer, 5/8‑hour days in winter; night shifts possible in winter months. Exposure to extreme heat (up to 120°F), cold (–15°F), wind, rain, sleet, and snow. Overtime required for storms, emergencies, and special projects. Personal safety gear mandatory: hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, respirator, chaps, and high‑visibility vest. Minimum Qualifications
Valid California Class C driver’s license (CDL) – answer CDL questions on application. Drug screening passed prior to hiring. Either Nine months of state service tree maintenance experience or One year of tree trimming experience with >40‑ft tree climbing. Application Instructions
