Parks and Recreation Department: Part-time Maintenance
Salary: $14.17 per hour
Job Type: Part-time
Incumbent serves as General Maintenance for the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for enforcing park policy and performing general upkeep and maintenance of county parks, facilities and grounds.
Responsibilities
Applies mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and construction techniques to projects and repairs, including current equipment, pumps, receptacles, switches, circuit breakers, lights, faucets, pipes, leaks, toilets, water heaters, small buildings, log cabins, signage, bridges, roofs, doors and windows, cabinets, tables, welding, painting, and concrete work.
Contributes to general park maintenance such as cleaning shelters, restrooms and shops and trash pickup and removal.
Maintains roofs and gutters, and performs preventative maintenance on vehicles, equipment and tools.
Operates various equipment/machinery in performance of duties, including wood splitters, utility vehicles, dump trucks, and pickup trucks.
Operates various hand and/or power tools, including hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, ratchets, mops, brooms, leaf blowers, weed eaters, and mowers.
Maintains assigned grounds, including mowing, trimming, weed eating, planting, pruning, mulching, spraying, brush and tree removal, and lake maintenance.
Provides park security, including enforcing park rules and regulations; participates in special events as needed.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.
Working knowledge of and ability to apply department policies and procedures and applicable OSHA safety policies and procedures.
Knowledge of safety precautions and practices with pesticides, herbicides, and cleaning chemicals, and ability to read and understand label directions.
Knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and the ability to prepare detailed reports such as activity reports.
Ability to operate various equipment/machinery in performance of duties, including wood splitters, utility vehicles, dump trucks, and pickup trucks.
Ability to properly operate hand and/or power tools, including hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, drills, ratchets, mops, brooms, leaf blowers, weed eaters, and mowers.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with coworkers, other county departments, and the public, including sensitivity to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including attendance, safety, drug‑free workplace, and personal conduct.
Ability to provide access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.
Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions, and present findings in oral or written form.
Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.
Ability to work on several tasks simultaneously and work rapidly for long periods, often under time pressure.
Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations.
Possession of a valid Indiana driver’s license and a demonstrated safe driving record.
Supplemental Information Ability to physically perform essential duties of the position, including driving, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, standing/walking for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, climbing ladders, pushing/pulling objects, moderate to heavy lifting, working in awkward or cramped positions, close/far vision, color/depth perception, hearing mechanical sounds, and handling/grasping/fingering objects.
Ability to work weekends and/or evening hours.
