The Opportunity We are partnering with organizations in Lansing that are seeking Tool Makers. Key Responsibilities
Design, fabricate, and assemble precision tools, dies, jigs, fixtures, and gauges from blueprints or CAD models.
Operate and maintain various machine shop equipment, including lathes, mills, grinders, and EDM machines.
Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and modifications on existing tooling to ensure optimal performance and extend lifespan.
Troubleshoot complex tooling problems, diagnose root causes, and implement effective solutions to minimize downtime.
Interpret technical drawings, specifications, and GD&T requirements to ensure accuracy and quality of manufactured tools.
Select appropriate materials, heat treatments, and surface finishes for tool components based on application and performance requirements.
Conduct thorough inspections and quality checks of finished tools and components using precision measuring instruments.
Recommended Qualifications
Completion of a recognized Tool & Die Maker apprenticeship or vocational program.
Proficiency in operating precision machining equipment (manual and/or CNC mills, lathes, grinders).
Strong ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
Demonstrated experience in the fabrication, repair, and maintenance of various tooling, dies, jigs, and fixtures.
Expertise in using a wide range of precision measuring instruments and inspection techniques.
Solid understanding of metallurgy, material properties, and treatment processes relevant to tooling.
Bonus Qualifications
Advanced CAD/CAM software proficiency for complex tool design and simulation.
Experience operating CMMs or other advanced metrology equipment for quality assurance.
Demonstrated ability in tooling design optimization for manufacturability or cost reduction.
Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
