Job Summary The Underground & Aerial Telecom Construction Technician supports the installation, replacement, and maintenance of underground and aerial telecommunications infrastructure. This role performs conduit rodding and roping, vault and handhole replacements, aerial strand pole framing, and the placement of coaxial and fiber optic cable for new builds, upgrades, and maintenance projects.

This position requires safe work practices in underground and aerial environments, proficiency in utility construction methods, and the ability to meet client, municipal, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities Underground Construction Activities

Perform rod and rope operations in existing conduit systems.

Install pull tape, mule tape, and pull ropes.

Assist with pulling coax and fiber optic cable through underground conduit.

Support cable placement for:

FTTH systems.

HFC plant.

Network upgrades, rebuilds, and maintenance.

Install innerduct and conduit accessories as required.

Vaults, Handholes & Structures

Remove and replace:

Underground vaults.

Handholes.

Pull boxes.

Set structures to grade; ensure proper alignment and drainage.

Perform base preparation, backfill, and minor concrete work.

Ensure vaults and lids meet load rating, safety, and accessibility standards.

Aerial Strand & Pole Framing

Perform aerial strand placement and tensioning on utility poles.

Install pole hardware including:

Strand clamps.

Bonds and grounding.

Anchors and guys (as required).

Perform pole framing per approved designs and client standards.

Maintain proper clearances in accordance with GO95 and local utility requirements.

Assist with pole transfers, riser installation, and mid-span attachments.

Aerial & Underground Cable Placement

Place and secure:

Aerial coax and fiber optic cable.

Riser, lashers, and coil management.

Maintain proper sag, lash, bend radius, and spacing.

Identify and report clearance, attachment, or plant integrity issues.

Protect existing utilities and live plant during placement.

Safety & Compliance

Comply with OSHA, Cal/OSHA, GO95, and GO128 regulations.

Establish safe work zones using proper traffic control.

Identify and protect existing utilities using USA markings and potholing.

Use PPE and inspect tools, ladders, bucket trucks, and equipment daily.

Documentation & Coordination

Capture photos and field documentation of completed work.

Assist with basic as-builts and daily work reports.

Coordinate with foremen, inspectors, traffic control, and other crews on-site.

Required Qualifications

1–3+ years of telecom construction experience (underground and/or aerial).

Experience With

Rod and rope operations.

Vault and handhole installation.

Aerial strand and cable placement.

Ability to read prints, pole sheets, and conduit maps.

Knowledge of ROW, utility, and telecom safety practices.

Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working on:

FTTH and HFC systems.

Aerial pole framing and strand builds.

Telecom upgrades or rebuild projects.

Familiarity with:

Lashing equipment.

Bucket truck and ladder operations.

Flagging or traffic control certification.

Confined space awareness or certification.

Physical & Work Requirements

Ability to lift 75 lbs or more.

Comfortable working:

At heights.

In bucket trucks and on ladders.

In confined spaces.

Outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Nights, weekends, and overtime as required.
