AIRPORT OPERATIONS SPECIALIST
The City of Carlsbad is accepting applications for the position of Airport Operations Specialist. Performs a variety of operational, safety, security and maintenance duties to support the safe and efficient operation at the City of Carlsbad Airport. This position ensures compliance with applicable FAA regulations, maintains airfield and facility standards, and provides a high level of service to airport users and the public.
Conducts daily airfield inspection independently to identify and document unsafe conditions, wildlife activity, lighting issues and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) in accordance with FAA standards and airport procedures. Monitors and maintains airport security by patrolling airfield and landside areas, inspecting gates and fences and monitoring vehicle and aircraft access.
Issues Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) as required to communicate airport conditions and operational restrictions. Ensures compliance with FAA 14 CFR Part 139 regulations and other applicable aviation regulations.
Operates a variety of equipment, including two-way radios, tractors, mowers, trucks and ATVs to maintain airfield surfaces, taxiways, runways and airport grounds.
Performs airfield and facility maintenance, including mowing, weed control, snow/ice removal, pavement marking, lighting maintenance and debris removal. Provides general building maintenance and custodial support, including cleaning restrooms and terminals, painting, minor plumbing repairs and carpentry work.
Communicates effectively with pilots, airport tenants, city staff and the general public; responds to request for information related to airport conditions, weather and available services.
Assists with emergency response procedures, including coordinating with police, fire, EMS and FAA personnel during incidents.
Participates in additional training, testing and certifications programs, such as DigaCast, to maintain proficiency and ensure regulatory compliance. Maintains records, logs and reports related to inspections, maintenance and operational activities.
Works primarily outdoors (approximately 90% of the time) in various weather conditions, including summer heat and winter cold.
Supports special projects, events and capital improvements at the airport as assigned.
All other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge of airport operations, security practices and basic FAA operational standards.
Knowledge of general building, grounds and airfield maintenance procedures. Knowledge of custodial practices and proper use of cleaning equipment and chemicals. Ability to operate tractors, mowers and other heavy equipment safely. Ability to operate a variety of maintenance and communication equipment.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions, procedures and safety standards.
Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with coworkers, tenants, pilots and the public. Ability to work independently and as part of a team to complete assigned tasks efficiently.
Ability to respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies or unusual situations.
Skill in maintaining detailed and accurate records and logs.
Qualifications: Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
High School or GED certificate. Experience equivalent to one (1) year full-time general building and grounds maintenance or a related field.
Experience in airport operations, security or maintenance is preferred but not required. Must possess, or obtain within 12 months of hire, and maintain a valid Public Applicator license issued by the State of New Mexico. Must be able to work evenings, weekends, holidays and during emergency situations as needed.
Must have an excellent work history to include dependability and stability. Must possess and maintain a valid State of New Mexico driver’s license. Proficient in reading, writing and speaking.
In addition to an excellent benefit package, starting hourly pay rate will be $28.43. Pay increase available for applicants with advanced skills.
