Department: Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highway Maintenance – District 6
Location: 39 Route 108/ Newfields, NH
Position: Highway Maintainer III (Position #19666)
Hours: 40 per week
Pay: $17.81/hr – $23.39/hr
Winter Maintenance Incentive: up to $5,000 (half paid at the beginning of the November 2025 winter plowing season and the remainder at the end of the March 2026 season)
Summary Performs skilled year‑round highway maintenance, operating and servicing complex heavy equipment for highway construction, maintenance, and emergency traffic services. Supervises entry‑level personnel and small work crews on the NH State Highway System.
Your Experience Counts Each additional year of approved formal education may replace one year of required work experience and vice‑versa.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of education and experience after high school, or an equivalent combination.
Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A (CDL‑A) with tank endorsement.
Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) meeting Department of Transportation minimum standards.
Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless already employed by the State.
Negative result on a pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen.
Ability to lift and carry material up to 50 lbs. on an intermittent basis.
Telephone or acceptable means of communication, available 24 hours per day.
Trainee Option Candidates with a valid CDL‑B who can obtain a CDL‑A with appropriate endorsements within one year of hire may be hired in trainee status, meeting the minimum qualifications within that period.
Preferred Qualifications Experience operating motorized highway equipment.
After‑Hire Requirements None.
Responsibilities
Operate and troubleshoot complex maintenance and construction equipment, including snow and ice removal, flood mitigation, and seasonal road surface treatments.
Maintain assigned equipment, perform field adjustments, emergency repairs, and troubleshooting to ensure serviceability.
Observe winter storm road conditions and determine appropriate plowing and treatment actions based on safety and environmental policies.
Provide training and supervision to entry‑level personnel and small crews.
Supervise, train, and review the work of crews, contractors, and entry‑level workers, ensuring compliance with Department policies and best practices.
Perform routine highway and road maintenance under adverse conditions, with exposure to high‑speed traffic, hazardous materials, inclement weather, and extreme temperatures.
Respond immediately to winter maintenance or other traffic emergency activities on a 24‑hour basis throughout the year.
