HIGHWAY MAINTAINER III - District 5 Position Number #21360. Salary: $17.81 - $23.39/hr. Trainee Status at $17.19/hr.

Agency: State of New Hampshire Department of Transportation, Bureau of Highway Maintenance - District 5. Location: 6 East Point Drive, Bedford, NH.

SUMMARY Performs skilled year‑round highway maintenance activities involving the operation and servicing of complex heavy equipment and machinery used for highway maintenance, construction activities, and for emergency traffic services. Supervises and reviews the work of entry‑level personnel and small work crews performing tasks or projects for the NH State Highway System.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS Each additional year of approved formal education may substitute for one year of required work experience, or vice versa.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after high school.

Valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A (CDL‑A) with appropriate tank endorsement.

Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) meeting D.O.T. minimum standards.

Commercial Driver’s License medical card unless currently employed by the State.

Negative pre‑employment urinalysis drug screen.

Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs.

Telephone or acceptable means of communication available 24/7.

TRAINEE OPTION Candidates with a valid CDL‑B and ability to obtain a CDL‑A with appropriate endorsements within 1 year of hire may be considered and hired in trainee status.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Experience in operation of motorized highway equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Operate and troubleshoot complex highway maintenance and construction equipment, machinery, and vehicle components.

Maintain assigned equipment and perform field adjustments, emergency repairs, and troubleshooting.

Implement safe winter storm road conditions procedures and provide training and supervision to entry‑level personnel.

Supervise, train, and review work of small crews, entry‑level workers, and contractors to ensure compliance with safety and environmental policies.

Respond immediately on 24‑hour, 365‑day basis for winter maintenance and traffic emergencies.

Perform heavy physical labor such as drainage construction, building, and equipment maintenance/repair.
