Our client, a growing public accounting firm in West Michigan, is seeking a Controller-level candidate to support a diverse portfolio of nonprofit organizations. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in both hands‑on accounting and advisory work and who enjoys serving as a strategic partner to mission‑driven clients.
✔️ Hybrid flexibility to work from home as needed
Location:
This role can be based out of our clients' Holland, Muskegon or Grand Rapids offices.
You will step into an established book of business and act as an outsourced controller for multiple nonprofits. The work is a balanced blend of accounting, advisory, analysis, forecasting, and client guidance.
What You’ll Do
Provide strategic oversight of full‑cycle client engagements for nonprofit organizations
Lead advisory discussions, delivering insights that guide budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
Manage grant reporting, fund accounting requirements, and compliance activities
Review financial statements, controls, and accounting processes for accuracy and improvement opportunities
Build financial models and budgets to support client growth and operational decisions
Mentor team members and collaborate cross‑functionally while maintaining high client service standards
Participate in informal business development as part of relationship building with existing clients
Work in a hybrid environment with in‑office time expected (local travel between firm offices as needed)
What We’re Looking For
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or related field
5 to 8 years of nonprofit accounting experience
(public accounting background required)
Strong understanding of
fund accounting, grant compliance, and nonprofit reporting frameworks
Experience acting in an advisory or outsourced controller capacity
Ability to interpret complex accounting issues and present findings clearly to client leadership
Excellent communication, organization, and prioritization skills
Experience with
QuickBooks Online, Sage Intacct, or NetSuite
preferred
