Position Summary The Business Development Manager supports Reed Smith’s Life Sciences Health Industry Group, helping drive business development and marketing efforts. This involves identifying, formulating and implementing business development and marketing strategies that complement initiatives across regions where the firm has a presence.
This is a hands-on role with ownership of developing key credentials and leading client pitch opportunities. The role leads engagement and implementation efforts for strategic BD priorities and helps raise the profile of the practice group internally and externally (with support from the Communications team).
The candidate will work largely autonomously on day-to-day practice group marketing and business development but will collaborate with BD professionals supporting the practice groups and other industry groups in other regions to ensure coordinated marketing across the firm’s global platform. The position sits within a growing firm-wide marketing team.
This is a high-profile role requiring gravitas and subject-matter expertise to drive growth, influence and motivate partners across the practice group and assist in building client relationships and brand. A proactive and enthusiastic approach with the ability to work with little supervision is key. The candidate should be a confident and effective communicator, with the ability to offer ideas at practice meetings and draft clear and accurate copy.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Develops a working knowledge of the group’s services, market position and inbound and outbound group cross-selling opportunities, as well as an understanding of the group’s revenue priorities, clients and prospects.
Develops understanding of the life sciences and health industries in the U.S. and Europe, as well as the product liability litigation landscape in the U.S. and Europe
Assists with designing and implementing integrated marketing plans to support the group’s key initiatives
Serves as lead BD on client-focused and sub-practice initiatives, leading strategic planning, research, client targeting, marketing material development, pitches and proposals, and tracking activities in CRM to evaluate ROI
May lead on marketing and business development planning for certain partners, including tracking and evaluating plans and efforts
Assists practice group leadership in identifying business development opportunities with new and existing clients
Conducts client/prospective client research and analysis; distills information for partners
Develops practice-related materials (practice group profiles, experience lists, case studies, etc.)
Leads high-priority group events or external conferences, including strategy and tracking ROI
May assist with integration of lateral hires into the group
Works with Pitches and Proposals team to develop tailored responses to RFPs, RFIs, and key proposals/presentations
Assists in tracking and disseminating key practice group activities and new business wins
Leads on award submissions for the group such as Chambers and Legal 500

Requirements Education:
Bachelor’s degree required.
Experience:
Minimum of 7 years’ experience in law firm marketing or business development, including significant interaction with partners
Strong knowledge of the legal industry and business development practices in a law firm environment
Solid commercial acumen and awareness of business and legal trends affecting firm clients
Experience with life sciences or health care industry, or product liability litigation, would be appreciated but not necessary

Proficiency with technology including advanced Microsoft Office.

Must work in the office as required.
Working Conditions You will be required to work in the office a minimum of 4 days per week. Occasional overtime may be required; schedule details discussed with your supervisor.
Compensation and Benefits Pay ranges:
This represents the presently-anticipated range; actual pay may vary by location and experience.
Miami/Texas/Dental/Atlanta: $130,000 - $148,000
Chicago: $139,000 - $159,000
