ASSOCIATE TRANSPORTATION PLANNER – Caltrans District 3

Job Overview Associate Transportation Planner (ATP) works under the supervision of the Senior Transportation Planner in the District 5 System Planning Branch. The incumbent administers, supports, and helps lead transportation plans, programs, and projects, primarily focused on rail and transit planning. The role incorporates multi‑modal system planning, community planning, active transportation, health, climate change, air quality, geospatial data analysis, and economics.

Classification: Associate Transportation Planner (JC‑501089)

Salary: $7,328.00 – $9,178.00 per month

Location: 50 Higuera St., San Luis Obispo, San Luis Obispo County

Work Type: Permanent, Full Time (Hybrid telework allowed)

Responsibilities The ATP will independently handle complex assignments within a balanced, multi‑modal state transportation program. Key duties include:

Integrating social, economic, environmental, transportation, and land‑use factors into planning documents.

Developing and maintaining regional transportation plans, focusing on rail and transit.

Conducting multi‑modal and community planning studies.

Analyzing active transportation, health, climate change, and air‑quality impacts.

Utilizing geospatial data and economic analysis to support program decisions.

Eligibility & Minimum Requirements Eligibility may be determined by your score on the Associate Transportation Planner/Transportation Planner exam. Candidates without current eligibility must be on the state examination list. Minimum qualifications will be verified prior to interview and appointment.

Special Requirements

Valid driver’s license required when operating a State‑owned or leased vehicle.

Working Conditions Position may be eligible for telework at the discretion of Caltrans. Employees are expected to report to the headquarters as needed. Business travel may be required. All commute expenses to the headquarters are the responsibility of the selected candidate.
