The General Anesthesiologist will provide patient care, train residents, manage daily administrative duties, and conduct quality assurance projects for the Anesthesiology Service across John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital, Provident Hospital, and clinics.

Typical Duties

Provides anesthetic care throughout the hospital while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.

Provides complete range of anesthetic care to patients including preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post anesthesia care in compliance with national Joint Commission standards.

Works independently, supervises residents, and provides medical direction to Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA).

Provides anesthesia related care in all dedicated areas of the Operating Rooms, Obstetrics, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Intensive Care Units, and other clinical settings.

Examines patients, obtains medical history, and uses diagnostic tests to determine risk during surgical and other medical procedures.

Coordinates and directs work during medical procedures with nurses, residents, CRNA’s, medical technicians, and health care providers.

Administers anesthetic or sedation during medical procedures using local, regional, general, and Monitor Anesthesia Care (MAC) types of anesthesia.

Coordinates the administration of anesthetics with surgeons during procedures in the operating room.

Provides and maintains life support and airway management as needed, and helps prepare patients for emergency surgery.

Determines when patients have recovered, or stabilized enough, to be transferred to Intensive Care Unit, or discharged home following surgery.

Works daily hours, takes 1st call (in-house), as well as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th calls or other calls based on OR needs.

Performs all other related duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university.

Licensed as a physician in Illinois or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment.

Successfully completed Anesthesiology Residency training.

Board certified or Board eligible in Anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiologist (ABA).

Active Illinois Controlled Substance License or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment.

Active Drug Enforcement Agency License or have the ability to obtain license prior to starting employment.

Active Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) years of experience in an academic program.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

Thorough knowledge and understanding of HIPAA to ensure confidentiality and security of patient information.

Strong working knowledge base in anesthesiology and pain management; participates in program planning, objectives, policies and standards essential to the delivery of quality anesthetic care.

Proficiency in the safe administration of blood and blood products ensuring all protocol is followed.

Excellent interpersonal communication skills; establish rapport with families.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Strong decision-making skills.

Excellent organizational skills.

Ability to work daily hours, take 1st call (in-house), as well as 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th calls or other calls based on OR needs.

Ability to build relationships within the organization and represent CCHHS with appropriate outside agencies.

Ability to prepare reports and effectively present information in meetings.

Ability to exercise discretion and make wise decisions.

Excellent teaching and mentoring skills in clinical anesthesia for oral surgery residents, anesthesia residents, and interns.

Ability to handle many simultaneous demands and meet all required deadlines.

Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when challenged.

Ability to perform clinical duties as an anesthesiologist.

Sensitivity and respect in caring for patients and in dealing with patients, family members, trainees, and CCHHS staff of diverse backgrounds.

Physical and Environmental Demands The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes compliance with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, and engineering and work practice controls as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.

Veteran Preference Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who have served in the Armed Forces for not less than 6 months of continuous service.

To take advantage of this preference a Veteran

must :

Meet the minimum qualifications for the position.

Identify self as a Veteran on the employment application by answering yes to the question, “Are you a Military Veteran?”

Attach a copy of DD 214, DD 215 or NGB 22 (Notice of Separation). If you have multiple DD 214s, 215s or NGB 22s, submit the one with the latest date. Coast Guard must submit a certified copy of the military separation from either the Department of Transportation (Before 9/11) or the Department of Homeland Security (After 9/11). Discharge papers must list Honorable Discharge Status. Discharge papers not listing an Honorable Discharge Status are not acceptable.

A copy of a valid State ID Card or Driver's License which identifies the holder of the ID as a Veteran may also be attached to the application at time of filing.

If items are not attached, you will not be eligible for Veteran Preference.

Must meet all required qualifications at time of application filing.

Degrees awarded outside the United States with the exception of those awarded in territories and Canada must be credentialed by an approved U.S. credential evaluation service belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). Original credentialing documents must be presented at interview.

Must successfully meet the credentialing standards established by Cook County Health and Hospitals System to include a State of Illinois MD license and any other license, certification, or specialized training no later than two (2) weeks prior to the candidate's start date.
