Position Summary Focuses on safety, performing patient care activities or tasks for psychiatric patients and maintaining a therapeutic and safe environment under the direction of licensed staff. Must be comfortable working with mental health patients, many of whom have experienced trauma, in a compassionate and professional manner while promoting a safe environment.

Position Key Accountabilities Essential Functions

Provides inpatient and outpatient non‑skilled nursing for psychiatric patients.

Provides supervision of patients on suicide or other critical precautions, 1:1 or 2:1, requiring staff to be within continuous arm’s length.

Responsible for operating equipment such as IVAC, sphygmomanometer, and scale.

Assist patients with activities of daily living (bathing, shaving, hygiene, toileting, grooming) while respecting privacy as much as possible.

Interact and engage with patients in a therapeutic manner using trauma‑informed care and therapeutic communication strategies.

Participate in implementing and formulating patients’ treatment plans based on observation of patients.

Help maintain a therapeutic milieu, assist with milieu management, and use crisis de‑escalation and trauma‑informed care strategies to reduce destructive/disruptive behavior and ensure safety of patient, self, and others.

Facilitate patients’ groups and participation in therapeutic activities (community meetings, transition, wrap‑up groups, etc.).

Implement crisis management skills (de‑escalation) as directed by licensed staff.

Must be able to restrain an adult, adolescent, or pediatric patient within HCPC guidelines when the patient is violent or aggressive.

In certain circumstances, must maintain initial physical control of a patient individually until assistance arrives.

Escort patients on and off campus for medical emergencies and diagnostic procedures when required.

Conduct patient Q15 and Q30 minute observation rounds with documentation.

Conduct environmental rounds on unit for safety.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills High School Diploma or equivalent required. 1 year experience in a patient care environment, Mental Health Technician/Psychiatric Technician Certificate, CNA, MA, EMT, 60 hours college credit in related discipline, or successful completion of Psychiatric Technician Internship program required.

Minimum Education High School Diploma or equivalent required

Minimum Experience 1 year in patient care, Mental Health Technician/Psychiatric Technician Certificate, CNA, MA, EMT, 60 hours college credit in related discipline, or successful completion of Psychiatric Technician Internship program required.

Physical Requirements Exerts up to 50 lb occasionally, 20 lb frequently, or 10 lb constantly to move objects.
