Position Overview As an Operations Specialist in Animal Care, you will ensure that proper animal care and husbandry are provided for all companion animals and aquatic life in the Pet Care Center (PCC). You will be the primary resource for animal care and maintenance, support the PCC’s budgeted sales and shrink goals, and execute merchandising and inventory strategies for companion animals and aquatic life. Your focus will be on meeting the needs of guests and their pets while maintaining the welfare, health, and proper care of animals. You will collaborate closely with the sales team to achieve these objectives.
Position Responsibilities
Have a strong interest in animal welfare and possess a high level of knowledge of companion animal and aquatic care.
Ensure all companion animals and aquatic life receive appropriate care, including maintenance, incident reports, and hourly health checks.
Process register transactions to create a great experience for each guest.
Support guest interactions in the selling model as needed.
Ensure merchandise is stocked, priced, and displayed to create a great presentation.
Complete training programs and educate other PCC partners in animal care and maintenance.
Promote a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.
Adhere to operational guidelines, policies, and procedures.
Evaluate guest inquiries and refer to the Leader on Duty as needed.
Act as the primary resource for guests and partners regarding animal education and care.
Order companion animals and aquatic life, supplies and merchandise with the sales team to maximize sales, margin, and inventory.
Analyze inventory data and recommend improvement areas.
Perform routine housekeeping tasks to maintain the professional image of animal habitats.
Ensure proper handling and documentation for all relinquished and adoption animals.
Verify animal maintenance tasks are completed as outlined in the Maintenance Schedules.
Participate in animal and aquatic life physical inventory counts.
Adhere to safety and loss prevention procedures.
Perform additional duties and projects as required.
Other Essential Duties
Utilize selling behaviors to provide an amazing guest experience.
Maintain a safe environment prioritizing partners, guests, and pets.
Contribute to a collaborative culture centered around pet health and wellness.
Engage in career development through available programs.
Basic Qualifications Minimum of one year of experience working with and/or caring for companion animals and aquatic life is required. Applicants must demonstrate a high level of knowledge of companion animals and aquatic life, strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, and a genuine interest in animal care. Professional appearance and demeanor are essential.
Certification Completing and maintaining the Petco Animal Care Certification program is required for this role.
Education / Skills High school diploma or GED equivalent. Proficiency in basic mathematics and accounting relationships, along with exceptional communication skills.
Supervisory Responsibility
Ensure PCC opening and closing procedures are followed.
Promote safety procedures for partners, guests, and pets.
Work Environment Job duties are conducted indoors, with occasional guest carryouts and veterinary visits. Physical demands include bending, kneeling, moving merchandise up to 50 pounds, and standing for long periods. Flexible schedule including evenings and weekends is required.
