Position Overview As an Operations Specialist in Animal Care, you will ensure proper animal care and husbandry for all companion animals and aquatic life in the Pet Care Center (PCC). You will be the primary resource regarding animal care and maintenance, supporting the PCC’s budgeted sales and shrink goals. Your role is to execute merchandising and inventory strategies focused on companion animals and aquatic life, and to work closely with the sales team to meet guests’ needs. Passion for animal welfare, a positive team attitude, and a commitment to excellence are essential.

Position Responsibilities

Maintain a strong interest in animal welfare and possess high-level knowledge of companion animal and aquatic care.

Ensure all animals receive appropriate care, including incident reporting and hourly health checks.

Process register transactions to create a great guest experience.

Support guest interactions using the selling model.

Stock, price, and display merchandise to create a great presentation.

Complete and apply training programs to maintain expertise and educate other PCC partners in animal care and maintenance.

Promote a positive culture of teamwork, inclusion, and collaboration.

Adhere to operational guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Evaluate guest inquiries and refer to the Leader on Duty as required.

Act as primary resource for guests and coworkers regarding animal education and care.

Order animals, supplies, and merchandise in partnership with sales to maximize sales, margin, and inventory.

Analyze inventory data and recommend improvements.

Perform housekeeping tasks to maintain the companion animal habitat and aquatic areas (sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning tanks, organizing merchandise, etc.).

Handle and document relinquished and adoption animals correctly.

Verify maintenance tasks are completed per the maintenance schedule.

Participate in animal and aquatic life inventory counts.

Follow safety and loss prevention procedures.

Perform additional duties and projects as required or assigned.

Basic Qualifications Minimum of one year of experience caring for companion animals and aquatic life. Must possess high knowledge of animal care and an aptitude for sales techniques, demonstrate professional appearance, have a genuine interest in animal welfare, and possess strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

Certification Completion and maintenance of the Petco Animal Care Certification program is required.

Education & Skills High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Demonstrate proficiency in mathematics and basic accounting relationships and exhibit exceptional communication skills.

Supervisory Responsibility

Ensure the Pet Care Center opens and closes according to established procedures.

Adhere to and promote safety procedures for partners, guests, and pets.

Work Environment The role is primarily indoors but includes guest carryouts and veterinary visits. Tasks involve bending, kneeling, moving merchandise up to 50 lb, and standing for extended periods. A flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends may be required to meet PCC needs.
