About the Department Colorado Department of Corrections: mission to support state government and citizens with customer service and redesign of service delivery.
Responsibilities
Document medical records accurately and timely.
Provide standardized patient education within nursing guidelines.
Transcribe medical orders and shift change reports.
Preserve confidentiality.
Administer medications, collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection control, provide referral to Clinical Services staff, perform orientation and crisis intervention with offenders.
Assist physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures.
Ensure ordering and restocking of medications and supplies.
Participate in restraining an offender for medical reasons when required.
Deliver PO, IM, IV, SQ, SL medications to offenders in medication lines, infirmaries, specialized cell houses, and PRN.
Observe and report the physical and emotional condition of offenders, including medication effectiveness during sick line emergencies.
Promote safety and security of the clinical environment with item/contraband control, counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments and key control.
Operate clinical equipment dictated by the unit.
Know Life Safety policies and procedures for the unit.
Report any security or safety violations.
Attend training programs, including 2‑day self‑defense to ensure self‑protection skills.
Work any shift, weekends, and holidays as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Current valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse from Colorado Board of Nursing or a state participating in eNLC.
Current valid driver’s license.
High school diploma or GED.
Legal eligibility to work in the United States; no sponsorship.
Physically able to complete defensive tactics training and meet physical requirements.
Ability to communicate fluently in English.
Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and assignment.
TB screening required upon hire.
Required Competencies
Self‑control, ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations.
Remain alert, emotionally stable and resilient under pressure.
Tolerance to stress, confinement and high‑stakes interaction.
Effectively treat offender patients daily in various settings.
Follow patient confidentiality standards.
Respond to emergency situations involving offenders or medical situations.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Read and comprehend English.
Follow instructions and pay attention to details.
Work full‑time shifts on a rotating schedule.
Preferred Qualifications
Intravenous Certification.
Long‑term and acute care experience.
Experience as an LPN in a correctional environment.
