Your Role on the Team The Nurse Practitioner I in the Department of Surgery is responsible for the independent yet team‑oriented management and coordination of all inpatient care of surgical patients primarily located at a new hospital in Irvine. The patient population includes general surgery, specialty surgical services, and all levels of care, including the intensive care unit. Services span colorectal surgery, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, hand surgery, minimally invasive surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic, urology, vascular and others.

Duties include evaluating care, ordering diagnostics, creating treatment plans, participating in inpatient sign‑out/hand‑off, rounding with surgery teams, residents, and attending physicians, conducting surgical consultations, and assisting in resuscitations from the ED and ICU. Responsibilities also cover coordination of procedures, scheduling operations, follow‑up, admission and discharge documentation, triaging phone calls, reviewing critical labs, performing initial and daily physical examinations, and exploring patients’ health needs in a trauma‑informed manner.

The Nurse Practitioner demonstrates advanced medical knowledge, clinical competence, sound judgment, professional communication skills, timely documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation. The role may also involve operating room assistance for RNFA credentialed practitioners.

This position is represented by the California Nurses Association (CNA) union.

What It Takes to be Successful Required:

Obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.

Maintain effective working relationships across the program and UCI Health System.

Exercise diplomacy and flexibility when interacting with physicians, nurses, other personnel, administrators, emergency and law‑enforcement officers.

Demonstrate customer‑service skills appropriate to the job.

Communicate medical information clearly in person and over the phone.

Have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, and maintain an appropriate work pace.

Possess the essential skills, knowledge and abilities required for assigned duties.

Be trained to use specialized medical equipment and procedures.

Adhere to privacy, confidentiality and security policies related to Protected Health Information (PHI).

Hold a current, active, unrestricted California Registered Nurse license.

Hold a current, active, unrestricted California Nurse Practitioner license.

Hold a current, active, unrestricted Furnishing license and DEA registration.

Hold an active National Provider Identifier (NPI).

Have NP National Board Certification (Adult Gerontology Acute Care AGACNP‑BC or ACNPC‑AG).

Hold current BLS and ACLS certifications.

Obtain ATLS certification within six months of hire.

Preferred:

Knowledge of Windows and MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Quest, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook).

Familiarity with UC policies and procedures.

Experience in trauma/critical‑care nursing.
