Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (WOC) nurses provide recommendations for the treatment of complex wounds requiring advanced wound care products and active therapies. WOC nurses also provide consulting services for patients that require stoma site selection, as well as pre‑operative and post‑operative ostomy teaching.

Qualifications

BSN degree with at least two years of registered nursing experience.

Graduation from an accredited Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Education Program.

On‑call requirement every 14 to 18 weeks.

Essential Job Functions

Manages outcomes for wound, ostomy and continence patients across the continuum of care by providing, coordinating and supporting clinical aspects of direct patient care.

Acts as a specialty consultant to physicians, nurses, physical therapists and patients for provision of WOC care for all areas.

Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to assess patient needs for nursing care, patient/family education and other services.

Coaches and assists team members to ensure optimum WOC patient care and efficient use of resources.

Integrates knowledge of age‑specific care, principles of oncology practice, institutional goals and standards, current professional practice standards and the WOC Nurses Society Standards in providing care.

Integrates results and theories of research studies to improve care and actively participates in data collection and analysis.

Assures continuity of care through appropriate discharge planning, coordination of services and education.

Demonstrates competency as a classroom and clinical educator to staff, patients/caregivers, participants of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse Educational Program and the Nursing Outreach Program.

Other duties as assigned.

Education

Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

Required: Graduation from an accredited Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Education Program.

Preferred: Master’s Degree in Nursing.

Experience

Required: 2 years Registered nursing experience.

Licenses and Certifications

Required: RN – State Licensure in Texas (upon hire).

Required: BLS – Basic Life Support (upon hire).

Required: CPR – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (upon hire).

Preferred: CWOCN – Certified Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nurse (upon hire).

Preferred: ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (upon hire).

Preferred: PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support (upon hire).
