Job Description American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Surgical Acute Med/Surg position requiring an active IL RN license and BLS certification.
Responsibilities
Work in the Surgical Acute unit of an acute care hospital setting
Unit includes 63 beds with a mix of private and observation beds
Patient population includes post‑op surgical, trauma, overflow medical patients requiring wound care, IV therapy, pain management, and use of drains, NGs, central lines, and TPN
Nurse‑to‑patient ratios are 4-5:1 on days and 5-6:1 on nights
Some patients may be on telemetry monitored by a central station; RNs do not read their own strips
Philips monitoring equipment and Epic EMR system are used
Night shift schedule with 12‑hour shifts (3 x 12s), 19:00-07:00, including every other weekend and holiday rotation
Travelers are first to float and may float to units of similar experience level
RN duties include dressing changes, wound care, IV therapy, managing drains, NGs, central lines, TPN, pain management, and ordering/administering Heparin drips
RNs do not titrate other drips beyond Heparin and are not required to use ventilators
Charge RNs do not take patient assignments, and house supervisor is present 24/7
Support from PCTs who assist with ADLs, vitals, accu checks, turning, and ambulation
Unit orientation includes 2 shifts with a preceptor plus one 12‑hour shift for EPIC and professional/unit education
No call or standby requirement
Any color scrubs are permitted
COVID vaccination is not required for this assignment
Local candidates within 50 miles are accepted at a local rate
Block scheduling may be considered upon contract approval
First‑time travelers will be considered
Requirements
Active IL RN license required at the time of consideration
Current AHA BLS certification required
Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg RN experience
Proven experience with post‑op care, wound care, IV therapy, critical thinking, and teamwork
Experience with Epic EMR is preferred
