Transportation Engineer Tech I: A16 $40,918 - $61,130

Transportation Engineer Tech II: A18 $45,521 - $71,055

General Description Performs basic design work and calculations. Performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer and registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Engineer Tech II

Performs intermediate design work and calculations; performs field work; uses automated systems and learns specialized procedures. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer and registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties of a Transportation Engineer Tech I

Prepares field notes

Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps

Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans

Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Essential Duties of a Transportation Engineer Tech II (in addition to Transportation Engineer I)

Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities, develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features

Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications

Schedules, coordinates and prepares documents for public hearings

Writes general notes, specifications and provisions

Minimum Qualifications Education:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Transportation Engineer Tech I Experience:

No experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related College education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Transportation Engineer Tech II Experience:

2 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent)

Transportation Engineer Tech I and II Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate

Transportation Engineer Tech I Competencies

Basic roadway design

Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities

Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments

Building construction and contractor field procedures

Writing and revising standards and procedures

Performing basic design and drafting

Training in a classroom, office, or field environment

Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems

Follow verbal and written instructions

Transportation Engineer Tech II Competencies (in addition to Transportation Engineer Tech I)

Intermediate design and hand and computer-aided drafting procedures

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions

Light work – Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs

Grasping – applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm

Talking – expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words

Hearing – perceive sound at normal speaking levels, receive information by oral communication

Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers

This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.

Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.

Required to work weekends and holidays.

Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.

Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.

Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.

Employee may be contacted during off-duty hours to see if he or she can report to work for emergency conditions.
