Summary of Position:

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Development and Athletics, the Director of Athletics leads a comprehensive NAIA intercollegiate athletic program representing 24 teams, supporting over 600 student athletes, and overseeing the Campus Recreation Department which includes 6 club sports with plans for growth. Responsibilities encompass budgeting, strategic planning, facilities management, policy development, compliance, scholarships, promotion, and leadership of the division. The role is integral to the Student Development team, collaborating with student life, involvement, success services, health and wellness, life-calling, career services, and spiritual formation.

Responsibilities

Public Relations

Oversee Associate Athletic Director of External Operations for business, donor, alumni, and family relations.

Coordinate media communications and internal operations scheduling, including contract negotiations for athletic facilities outside of conference services season.

Support and promote conference services and sports camps conducted by Indiana Wesleyan University coaches or outside groups.

Develop and oversee spirit clubs, game atmosphere coordination, halftime groups, announcers, and pep band operations.

Management

Ensure compliance with Crossroads League and NAIA regulations.

Create short- and long-range strategic plans and a systematic evaluation process for staff performance and program improvement.

Maintain and update athletic department policies and manual annually.

Meet routinely with the Vice President for Student Development and Athletics and attend weekly Student Development and Athletics team meetings.

Collaborate with the Division of Health and Human Performance, Academic Affairs, and faculty on coaching roles, academic policies, and conference participation.

Serve as liaison with a faculty athletic committee and manage athlete discipline, ministry efforts, and record keeping for awards and achievements.

Develop alumni support initiatives, marketing plans, and coaching support studies to define roles, salary, and incentives.

Assess athletic scholarships, recruitment strategies, and character enhancements while managing tuition discount variables.

Oversee extracurricular student leadership initiatives, community service, and funding development.

Financial

Develop, administer, and distribute the athletic budget and recruiting budgets for each program.

Coordinate equipment purchases and donor relationships, foundations, and government officials.

Generate new revenue sources through camps, clinics, concession sales, and summer camp partnerships.

Approve requisitions, vouchers, purchase orders, and checks related to athletics.

Review equipment inventory to inform fiscal planning.

Personnel

Support the department mission of discipleship and hire, train, supervise, and motivate coaches and staff.

Work with the athletic training department to coordinate care of student athletes.

Develop and implement staff reviews, conflict management, and professional development programs.

Facilitate annual goal statements and measure progress.

Coordinate staff meetings and planning initiatives.

Athletics

Collaborate on student/athlete recruitment policies with coaches and the Admissions office.

Schedule athletic events, mail contracts, and coordinate game logistics, including transportation, lodging, and meals.

Coordinate equipment, uniforms, and technology approvals with marketing oversight.

Arrange pre-season, in-season, and post-season travel and practice plans.

Distribute athletic schedules and manage safe transportation for away events.

Additional Duties

Request, monitor, and oversee budgetary responsibilities with integrity.

Participate in committees, councils, and professional organizations.

Provide student counsel on spiritual, personal, emotional, or academic matters.

Maintain a professional image consistent with Indiana Wesleyan University's mission.

Uphold student handbook policies with integrity.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications

Strong Christian commitment and adherence to Indiana Wesleyan University's Community Lifestyle Statement.

Master's degree in an applicable field.

Minimum of ten to fifteen years of athletic administration and coaching experience at the college level, with supervisory responsibilities.

Demonstrated ability to supervise and motivate staff, innovative planning, organizational skills, and effective communication.
