Camp Evergreen Counselor in Training & Media Unit Director - Seasonal Position offered by YMCA of Central New York. Salary $5,250 for the season plus staff training compensation $16.00/hour. Monday‑Friday, 8 weeks.

General Functions Under the direction of the Senior Program Director and Assistant Camp Director, the Unit Director supervises up to 10 staff, including counselors in training. The Director organizes daily activities, special events, rainy‑day activities, and plans four overnight camps to ensure all objectives of the YMCA and age‑appropriate programs are met. Provides opportunities for campers to build confidence, learn life‑skills, and develop friendships.

Responsibilities / Duties / Functions / Tasks

Attend and participate in staff training and orientation.

Be available to work daily within the camp schedule as outlined by the Camp Director.

Work with other staff to develop a full recreational and educational program each session.

Attend all weekly staff meetings and participate in extra meetings as needed.

Conduct a weekly lunch meeting with other staff in the assigned group to discuss activity plans and overnight program.

Meet with the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director as needed to discuss camp matters.

Assist in the development and implementation of special programs as assigned by the Program Director.

Maintain all records for the group including attendance, camper assignments to counselors, overnight attendance, and parent communications.

Assist with the supervision of lunch, ensuring campers eat properly and stay hydrated.

Assist campers with the daily organization of their belongings.

Participate in all activities, games, sports, and swim programs as required.

Act professionally at all times, including personal appearance, speech, and interactions with campers, families, and staff.

Maintain a friendly working relationship and serve as a resource for other staff members.

Ensure campers, CITs, and counselors experience a fun, meaningful, and safe program.

Supervise CITs, provide weekly positive feedback, and submit written evaluations to the Assistant Camp Director.

Maintain cleanliness and organization of the camp area, including pavilion, fields, shed, and YMCA building spaces.

Handle all discipline problems consistently, consulting the Camp Director or Assistant Camp Director as needed.

Plan and lead one overnight per session (four total).

Assign campers to teepee groups and oversee end‑of‑day activities, including bus pick‑ups and extended hours.

Attend all planned family nights (two per summer).

Be available after camp hours on the last day of the season to help close out camp.

Perform all other tasks assigned by the Program Director, Assistant Camp Director, or Camp Director.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in a child‑related field or equivalent experience working with children in recreation and/or education.

At least one year of prior experience working in a camp setting or environment.

Qualifications

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Mature, responsible, and sincerely interested in working with people.

Knowledge of YMCA mission, goals, and values.

Ability to utilize resources for programming ideas and implement them effectively.

Knowledge of age‑appropriate activities and expectations for children ages 3 to 14.

Trainings & Certifications

CPR/AED and/or First Aid certifications (opportunity provided).

Attend and complete YMCA Child Abuse Prevention and other related training at Camp Evergreen Orientation.

Work Environment Duties are performed outdoors and in a camp group setting; employees may be exposed to undesirable conditions, communicable diseases, and injury risk from children. Employees must follow the preventive health policies of the Camp at all times. The noise level is moderate to above average. Employees may be frequently exposed to wet/cold, hot/humid climate.
