Senior Claims Specialist
Location:
Lakewood, Colorado, United States Work Arrangement:
Hybrid (with required business travel to office locations and customer sites)
Position Summary The Senior Claims Specialist provides key support in the handling and management of claims across multiple lines of coverage, with a primary focus on Liability claims (Commercial Auto and General Liability). This role is responsible for evaluating coverage, liability, legal exposure, and damages, and for investigating, negotiating, and resolving assigned claims in a timely manner in accordance with internal standards and regulatory requirements. Assistance with and or handling select first party Commercial Property, Auto, and Inland Marine claims may be required as needed. The role also delivers a high level of customer service to internal and external business partners.
Primary Responsibilities
Review, analyze, and interpret policy conditions, exclusions, and endorsements to resolve coverage and liability issues for assigned claims
Prepare reservation of rights letters, nonwaiver agreements, and coverage DISCLAIMERS to address claim coverage issues
Review and evaluate claim reserves to ensure reserves appropriately reflect potential exposure
Investigate claims to evaluate coverage and legal issues, including meeting with insureds and witnesses and obtaining statements, records, and other evidentiary materials
Maintain thorough documentation and reporting of investigation and claims handling activities
Negotiate and resolve claims with claimants, insureds, and counsel, including participation in mediation, arbitration, or other court supervised settlement efforts, and prepare appropriate resolution documents
Maintain working knowledge of regulatory and jurisdictional requirements
Provide direction to and manage defense counsel, independent adjusters, and other third parties retained to assist with specific claims
Identify and pursue risk transfer opportunities when applicable, including responding to claims for defense and indemnity and pursuing recovery from other parties on behalf of insureds
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications Minimum of 5 years of experience in the following areas:
Coverage Review:
Interpreting policies, agreements and contracts, reservation of rights, and DISCLAIMERS
Claims Investigation:
Obtaining statements and authorizations; retaining qualified experts and counsel
Claims Administration:
Reporting, reserve reviews, and compliance knowledge of laws and procedures
Claims Settlement:
Preparing disclaimer letters, releases, and proof of loss statements; participation in legal proceedings when necessary
Additional requirements:
Strong knowledge of coverage, negligence principles, investigation practices, and negotiation techniques
Ability to obtain and maintain state adjusting licenses as needed
Service oriented, with ability to provide prompt, efficient, and effective claims and customer service
Strong verbal and written communication skills with customers, claimants, opposing counsel, defense counsel, and members of the public
Ability to manage and organize multiple priorities and tasks simultaneously
Excellent judgment, negotiation, and decision making skills
Ability to travel to off site locations and overnight as business needs require
Experience handling liability claims across western states, including Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, California, Washington, and Oregon
