Description Of Basic Functions And Responsibilities The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Community College District is a collaborative and inclusive organization that strives for equity and equal opportunity and serves a diverse student population. Under administrative leadership, the part-time college instructor’s responsibility is to teach classes and participate in processes that lead to continuous improvement of instruction and programs, student success and completion, and the advancement of Shasta College’s vision, mission, and values.

All temporary part‑time instructors are compensated a salaried flat rate ranging from $59.19 to $84.20 per clock hour taught each semester in accordance with the terms of the collective bargaining agreement between the Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Joint Community College District and Shasta College Faculty Association/CTA/NEA.

Typical Duties, Knowledge and Ability Successful applicants will demonstrate broad preparation and depth of knowledge in the discipline and will further demonstrate the following knowledge and abilities:

Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning, and service to a diverse student population;

Ability to effectively work with students with a wide range of skills, motivations, academic, and vocational goals;

Ability to design and deliver courses, including those offered in different modalities (in‑person, online, hybrid);

Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities;

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;

Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency;

Ability to assess student learning outcomes;

Knowledge of and willingness to explore new technologies and teaching practices that would benefit students and programs;

Experience indicating sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities;

Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.

Specific Responsibilities Classroom Responsibilities:

Meet classes/laboratories as assigned within the academic calendar and/or during intersessions and summer sessions.

Develop and implement instruction for each class and laboratory period, consistent with the official course outline and district guidelines.

For online and hybrid courses, maintain online course components, including asynchronous or synchronous content delivery.

Provide regular student‑student and student‑instructor contact for online and hybrid courses.

During the first week of class, develop and distribute a syllabus for each course to communicate objectives, grading, testing, attendance, and other requirements.

Provide regular, timely feedback to students; return all graded work promptly.

Assign final grades for courses as required by district policy and California Education Code.

Demonstrate respect for student rights as specified in district policy and applicable laws.

Submitt requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials in a timely manner and with consideration of cost to the student.

Refer students to tutoring and related student services when appropriate.

Supervise students in off‑campus activities when required as part of a course.

Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours.

Participate in professional development to remain current in the assigned discipline.

Submit required administrative paperwork, including student learning outcomes, in a timely and accurate manner.

Complete discipline‑specific classroom responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities:

Participate in the evaluation process as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.

Continue to develop professional skills and current subject matter knowledge.

Keep and submit official records required by district policy and administrative procedures.

Abide by district policies concerning district property and safety.

Report absences due to illness or personal necessity to the supervising administrator.

Recommend purchases of instructional supplies and equipment as needed.

Fulfill all obligations as established in the current collective bargaining agreement.

Other Activities (Encouraged, not required):

Schedule and maintain office hour days and times, ensuring they are communicated clearly to students and staff.

Participate in district participatory governance through ad hoc or advisory committees.

Participate in the curriculum review process, develop new courses in response to student or community needs.

Participate in program review and annual planning within established cycles.

Attend and participate in department and division meetings.

Assess learning outcomes and participate in learning outcome processes.

Participate in required professional development activities that improve pedagogy and student success.

Experience/Education Education required:

Bachelor’s degree and two years of professional experience

OR

Associate degree and six years of professional experience

or equivalent.

Experience required: Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse backgrounds, including students with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Equivalency The state of California has established minimum qualifications for academic positions in California Community Colleges to promote professionalism, instructional integrity, and academic rigor. The primary minimum qualification for academic positions is an advanced degree in the relevant subject matter for the position. Applicants who do not meet the minimum education requirement(s) for a discipline may still be qualified for the position if they can demonstrate they have acquired the knowledge, skills, and abilities conferred in the degree program through any combination of education and experience.
