CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER District 3 – Sacramento, California

Responsibilities

Sweep, shovel, and rake asphalt; pick up roadside litter and dead animals; haul garbage.

Use tools such as picks, shovels, broom, pitchfork, and hoe.

Remove brush and undergrowth from highway rights‑of‑way using an axe, pruning shears, handsaw, chain‑saw, weed eaters, shovel, hoe, and bushchipper.

Seal cracks, resurface, oil, and patch roads.

Work in extreme conditions: heat up to 120°F, cold to ‑15°F, wind, rain, sleet, and snow.

Qualifications

Pass the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker examination.

Possess a valid California Class C driver’s license.

Pass a drug screening and a Department of Justice background check.

Minimum qualifications must be verified prior to interview.

Special Requirements

Valid California driver’s license (CDL) with class, expiration, and endorsements listed.

Drug screening requirement before hiring.

Class C driver’s license required.
