Job Description And Duties Limited Term 12 months; may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Under direction, in a State correctional facility, either to supervise and coordinate the work of assigned Correctional Officers or to have charge of small but difficult areas or custodial activities; and to do other related work.

An employee in this class supervises Correctional Officers in an assigned major area or on an assigned watch, or may be in charge of the custodial functions in limited but difficult and responsible areas of activities. These include the arsenal, dining room, kitchen, visiting room, mail room, cell blocks, storeroom, receiving and release unit, or control room. In some assignments, the Correctional Sergeant is not required to supervise Correctional Officers.

Supervises the work of Correctional Officers in the safe custody, discipline, and welfare of inmates or parolees on an assigned watch or in a major area; calls roll of Correctional Officers supervised; makes inspection tours to see that Correctional Officers are alert and diligent in the performance of their duties; conveys to superiors complaints made by Correctional Officers and inmates; takes, receives, and checks periodic counts of inmates; directs the inspection of quarters of inmates for contraband, sanitary conditions, and orderliness; examines incoming and outgoing mail; develops procedures and posts orders; provides on-the-job training for Correctional Officer staff; promotes acceptable attitudes and behavior of inmates; rates inmates on conduct and productivity; directs visits to inmates and makes arrangements for showing visitors about the facility; reports infractions of rules and regulations and irregular or suspicious occurrences and takes or recommends appropriate action; prevents escapes and injury by inmates to themselves and to property; searches for and recaptures escaped inmates; receives, checks, and issues guns, ammunition, and other supplies and equipment; may participate as a leader in the group treatment program for inmates or parolees; prepares employee and performance reports; and keeps records and prepares reports.

Candidates new to CDCR or the Division of Juvenile Justice are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, and Tuberculosis testing prior to appointment followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.

Minimum Qualifications Either I: One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Correctional Program Supervisor I.

Or II: Two years of experience in the California state service performing duties comparable to those of a Correctional Officer, Group Supervisor, or Youth Counselor.

Minimum age for appointment: 21 years.

Felony Disqualification: Existing law provides that persons convicted of a felony are disqualified from employment as peace officers. Such persons are not eligible to compete for, or be appointed to, positions in this class.

Drug Testing Requirement Applicants for positions in this class are required to pass a drug screening test. (The drug screening test will be waived for employees who are currently in a designated "Sensitive" class for which drug testing is required under State Personnel Board Rule 213.)
