Role Our Bend maintenance crew needs a leader to support and guide maintenance workers while helping to repair and maintain roadways, highways, bridges, and structures. In this role, you will work closely with the maintenance manager to plan, assign and oversee work performed by the maintenance crew. Help keep Oregon’s roads and travelers safe.
A Day in the Life
Plan, prioritize, schedule and assign work based on material, equipment and staff availability.
Advise and guide employees in effective performance and investigate and resolve work‑related issues.
Patrol highways and structures looking for potential accidents, hazards, and damage.
Respond to incidents and other emergencies and provide traffic control.
Conduct new employee orientation and training on operation of heavy and light equipment and safe handling of materials.
Ensure proper maintenance of equipment by scheduling repairs and services with vendors and mechanics.
Assist the transportation maintenance manager with short- and long‑range planning and budget preparation.
Participate as a member of the district operations team coordinating district‑wide resources.
Review crew work to ensure it meets standards, policies and procedures, and provide input on employee performance.
Prepare, review and sign various documents.
Exposure to noise, extreme heights, all weather conditions, heavy equipment, pesticides and hazardous waste materials is expected.
Must be able to move around rough terrain, bend and stoop for extended periods and may need to lift up to 60 pounds.
May need to be available after hours, on weekends and holidays for emergency, on call and weather related purposes.

Special Qualifications
CDL‑A required: Must hold a current, valid commercial driver’s license A (CDL‑A) with no air brake restrictions, no 5th wheel restrictions, no manual transmission restrictions. Must also obtain a tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire.
Valid driver license and acceptable driving record required. Pre‑employment driving record checks, including FMCSA Clearinghouse registration and query checks, will be conducted.
As of Sept. 29, 2025, Federal policy change may impact applicants with EAD regarding CLP or CDL.
Maximum 45‑minute response time to 63055 N Highway 97, Bend OR 97703 for emergency call‑outs.

Experience communicating effectively and professionally with contractors, engineers, crew members and the public.
Basic computer skills and experience coordinating routine documentation.
Understanding of highway maintenance operations and safety procedures.
Experience operating construction or maintenance machinery and overseeing projects.
Experience leading and working cohesively with different groups to execute tough decisions with awareness, efficiency and integrity.
