Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Complete Streets Supervisor, the incumbent must retain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License and will operate equipment, construction machinery, vehicles, and tools. The incumbent will perform labor‑intensive work during emergency operations and work associated with maintaining the state highway system, specializing in Complete Streets (sidewalk, crosswalk, and bike ways) facilities, including field site inventory evaluation and condition assessment of Complete Streets facilities. Travel may be required, including overnight stays, to meet department needs.

Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the CALTRANS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II exam. For those without current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who are new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for this position. Working Conditions Position located at District 11 / Maintenance Division / West Region, San Diego County. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. This is a limited‑term position that may be extended to 24 months or become permanent. The work is physically demanding and requires stamina. Incumbent will work on or near roadways with a high volume of vehicular traffic, with heavy equipment, hot or pressurised materials, and chemicals used for highway maintenance. Incumbent may be outside in all types of weather and environmental conditions. Work may include entering confined spaces that are commonly dirty, wet, and have little or no lighting.

Incumbent will also work irregular shifts, including weekends, nights, holidays, and emergency situations. The incumbent may be required to answer calls after normal working hours to respond to unforeseen conditions or emergencies.

Minimum Requirements

Hold a valid, unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver’s License with tank vehicle (N) endorsement.

Pass a drug screening prior to being hired.

Possession of a valid driver’s license when operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.

Minimum qualifications as stated in the Classification Specification (education, experience, or certification).

CALTRANS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II salary: $4,883.00 – $6,127.00 per month (new to state candidates as noted above).

Desirable Qualifications

Possession of P (Passenger/Bus) and H (Hazardous Materials) endorsements.

Equivalence to completion of the 12th grade.

Experience with Complete Streets facilities (sidewalks, crosswalks, bike ways).
