Grade 8 Social Studies Teacher – Waterville Junior High School

The Waterville Public School System serves over 2,000 students of all ages in and near Waterville, Maine. Waterville Public Schools is excited to invite an enthusiastic and student-centered educator to join our dynamic team as a Grade 8 Social Studies Teacher at Waterville Junior High School. We are looking for someone who is eager to foster curiosity, engage learners, and collaborate with colleagues to support every student’s growth. The successful candidate will work closely with a committed team of educators to support a strong academic foundation, while building a positive and inclusive classroom environment. The city of Waterville is located on the banks of the Kennebec River and is easily accessible from two exits off I-95 as well as Route 201. Primary Responsibilities
Teach social studies to Grade 8 students
Foster inquiry-based learning through hands‑on activities, discussions, and real‑world connections.
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, including multilingual students and those with IEPs or 504 plans
Collaborate with colleagues to plan, assess, and reflect on instruction.
Maintain regular communication with families and staff regarding student progress and classroom activities
Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel safe and valued
Qualifications
Valid Maine Department of Education certification (Elementary Teacher, 020 or appropriate endorsement for middle-level social studies)
Strong knowledge of social studies content and instructional best practices for middle school learners
Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues
Strong classroom management and communication skills
Willingness to collaborate with grade-level and content-area teams
A passion for working with early adolescents in a supportive and inclusive school culture
