Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to repair defective electrical wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures in visitor centers, offices, ranger stations, museums, collection storage facilities, hotels, restaurants, maintenance facilities, public buildings, employee housing areas, residences, restrooms, campgrounds, ships, boats, trains, garages, and/or shops. The incumbent is required to adhere to all applicable electrical safety codes and standards.

Initial cut‑off:

Monday, January 5, 2026. Additional referral certificates will be issued when vacancies remain.

Responsibilities

Repair defective electrical wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures.

Remove, replace, tighten, splice, solder, and insulate defective wiring, controls, equipment, and fixtures.

Maintain electrical wiring and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.

Follow all standard safety procedures, wearing all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Qualifications

Ability to perform the work without more than normal supervision (screen out).

Ability to use and maintain hand tools (Electrical Work).

Ability to use electrical drawings.

Knowledge of electrical equipment.

Proficiency in technical practices and instruments used in shop and trade practices.

Electrical troubleshooting skills.

Requirements / Conditions of Employment

U.S. citizenship required.

Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.

Participation in Direct Deposit Electronic Funds Transfer Program.

Incidental driving may be required; a valid state‑issued driver’s license must be maintained.

Uniform required; allowance provided.

Government housing not available.

Minimum age requirement: 18 years old if no high‑school diploma, or 16 years old if meeting high‑school equivalency or vocational training criteria.

Physical Demands

The position requires working from ladders, scaffolds, and other confined spaces, performing tasks such as sitting, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, crawling, and carrying up to 50 pounds or more. Exposure to electrical shock, arc hazards, and other health hazards may occur. Remote locations may require walking, hiking, or driving over rough terrain.

Working Conditions

Work occurs both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work may involve extreme weather, temperatures from below 0 to over 100 degrees, and elevations up to 10,000 feet. Exposure to dust, fumes, gases, vapors, noise, vibration, cuts, abrasions, and hazardous materials is possible. Compliance with safety and occupational health requirements is mandatory.
