Purpose of Position About the Department The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Dakota is an interdisciplinary program jointly supported by the College of Engineering & Mines and the School of Medicine & Health Sciences. The department emphasizes innovation-based learning, experiential education, and community partnership. Biomedical Engineering at UND integrates principles of engineering and biological sciences to develop solutions that improve human health and well-being. The department offers growing undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students for impactful careers in healthcare, industry, and research.

Duties & Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership and oversight for undergraduate and graduate programs in Biomedical Engineering, emphasizing innovation-based learning.
Foster a student-centered environment that emphasizes hands‑on learning, inclusion, and experiential education, including capstone design projects, laboratory courses, and project-based learning experiences.
Mentor faculty in teaching effectiveness, curriculum design, and professional development to support innovation-driven instruction and active learning pedagogies.
Strengthen interdisciplinary and industry partnerships to expand real‑world learning opportunities, internships, and applied projects for students.
Manage departmental operations, including budgeting, resource allocation, and personnel supervision.
Support faculty and student engagement in scholarly and applied research, including projects that integrate learning with real‑world problem‑solving.
Represent the department in college and university committees, accreditation activities, and strategic initiatives.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong leadership, management, and organizational abilities.
Demonstrated commitment to student success, diversity, and inclusion.
Ability to build and sustain effective collaborations within and outside the university.
Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related engineering or science discipline.
Record of teaching, service, and scholarship commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure.
Minimum of five years of experience in higher education.
Leadership or administrative experience, such as program director, associate chair, or similar role.
Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identityand eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
Established record of success in curriculum development or accreditation leadership, including development of capstone design courses, project-based learning, or laboratory curricula.
Experience with academic assessment, faculty development, or student recruitment and retention, particularly in programs emphasizing experiential and innovation-based learning.
Proven record of guiding students to create value through project-based or innovation-based learning experiences where students deliver solutions, prototypes, or analyses that address authentic stakeholder needs.
Industry work experience
Evidence of developing external connections by creating and maintaining industry, clinical, or community partnerships to provide students with real-world contexts, mentorship, and applied learning opportunities.
Experience managing departmental budgets, resources, or grants which support student-centered teaching and experiential programs.
Record of supporting or participating in collaborative or applied research projects in biomedical engineering or related fields, ideally integrated with student learning experiences.
Evidence of collaborative leadership, including students, faculty, and external stakeholders in policy development.
Extensive knowledge of teaching methods that promote student value creation through connections, curiosity, and an entrepreneurial mindset
Experience teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Experience using Evidence-Based Teaching Practices
A thorough understanding of open-ended, inquiry-driven learning activities such as customer discovery, problem framing, or identifying unmet clinical and community needs in biomedical engineering.
