The Position The Utah Department of Transportation is looking for a hard working, hands‑on individual to fill a Construction Transportation Technician II position with Region Two’s Construction Crew 2759. This is a very important position that is part of a team that oversees and is involved with the construction and maintenance of state roads and keeps Utah Moving as safely and efficiently as possible.

Principle Duties As a Transportation Technician in construction, you will perform inspection activities related to work performed by contractors, test roadway materials, and use various software to administer construction projects. To ensure operational readiness, you will also work in maintenance, operating heavy equipment from snowplows to backhoes to maintain the roads, inspecting and testing materials placed, and using software to manage the department’s assets. After 18 months, each Transportation Technician is expected to cross‑train in various construction areas. You will perform the following:

Assisting with the inspection and documentation of UDOT construction projects.

Performing materials testing to ensure compliance with project specifications.

Performing construction inspection and documentation on the work performed by contractors.

Performing materials testing and providing the required documentation to ensure features are constructed/installed according to project plans and specifications.

Working with contractors to complete construction, maintenance, and permit projects.

When cross‑training in a maintenance role, assist in snow removal operations as needed.

Removing snow from state roadways using snowplows, graders, blowers, etc.

Performing general maintenance on equipment.

Completing other duties as assigned and needed by department leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

Has a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or is able to obtain one within 6 months of hire through department‑provided training and participate in the Region’s snow plan.

Must reside within a 30‑minute response time of the Region Boundary.

Is able and willing to provide 24‑hour availability.

Will self‑provide a smartphone with data and be eligible to receive a monthly taxable allowance to offset the cost of cell plans.

Is able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Is reliable and can work well in a team environment.

Is willing to complete continued education in the UDOT Transportation Technician Education Program (TEP).

Obtain certifications required by the Region within the first year and keep those certifications current.

Preferences

Class A Commercial Driver’s License.

Transportation Education Program (TEP) Training.

Construction experience on highway or local roadway projects.

UDOT maintenance/construction experience.

Professional work experience operating heavy equipment.

Professional work experience with and/or knowledge of roadway maintenance and snow removal.

Supplemental Information

Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is a requirement for all CDL holders. Selected candidates will be required to register and authorize UDOT to conduct full pre‑employment queries and limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment to be considered for this role. This position is subject to pre‑employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.

Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.

This position requires frequent exposure to hazardous and uncomfortable traffic and environmental conditions due to the nature of the work assignment.

This position requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand, walk over rough surfaces, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
