The Position The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) seeks two hard‑working, hands‑on individuals to fill a

Construction Transportation Technician II

position with Region Two’s Construction Crew 2758. This vital role is part of a team that oversees or participates in the construction and maintenance of state roads, ensuring Utah’s roads stay safe and efficient.

Principle Duties As a Transportation Technician in Construction, you will perform inspection activities related to contractor work, test roadway materials, and use various software systems to administer construction projects. You will also support road maintenance, operate heavy equipment (from snowplows to backhoes), inspect and test materials, and manage the department’s assets through software tools. After 18 months, you are expected to cross‑train into multiple construction areas.

Assist with inspection and documentation of UDOT construction projects.

Perform materials testing to ensure compliance with project specifications.

Document construction work performed by contractors.

Work with contractors to complete construction, maintenance, and permit projects.

When cross‑training in a maintenance role, assist in snow removal operations as needed:

Remove snow from state roadways using snowplows, graders, blowers, etc.

Perform general maintenance on equipment.

Complete other duties as assigned by department leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire through department‑provided training.

Reside within a 30‑minute response time of the Region boundary.

Provide 24‑hour availability.

Self‑provide a smartphone with data and be eligible for a monthly taxable allowance to offset cell plan costs.

Lift a minimum of 50 pounds.

Reliable team player.

Committed to continued education in the UDOT Transportation Technician Education Program (TEP).

Obtain and maintain required certifications within the first year.

Preferences

Class “A” CDL.

Completion of the Transportation Education Program (TEP) training.

Construction experience on highway or local roadway projects.

UDOT maintenance or construction experience.

Professional experience operating heavy equipment.

Professional experience with roadway maintenance and snow removal.

Supplemental Information

All commercial driver license holders must register with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. The selected candidate will authorize UDOT to conduct full pre‑employment and limited CDL queries for the duration of employment.

Position subject to pre‑employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing after hire; conditional offer may be contingent on test results.

Work involves exposure to traffic and environmental hazards.

Position requires physical exertion: standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and lifting moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) repeatedly or for long periods.

Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director or Group Leader.
