The Position The State of Connecticut, Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) is currently seeking a qualified and experienced individual for the position of Maintainer to join our team within the Physical Plant.

SCHEDULE: Full‑time, (37.5 hours), 2nd Shift, Monday – Friday 2:00pm – 10:00pm

About Us For over 160 years, DVA has been caring for its veterans and their dependents. As a Department, we believe in "serving those who have served." This is accomplished through our Office of Advocacy and Assistance, Residential Facility, Healthcare Center, and Cemetery and Burial Services.
Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)
Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial)
Grounds care
Food services
Operation of trucks of less than five (5) ton capacity
Parking garage
Examples of Duties Building And Equipment Maintenance
Checks gauges for established settings
Checks steam trap indicators
Checks belt tension (blowers, fans and rotating equipment)
Changes filters (water, gas, HVACR, etc.)
Inspects doors for damage
Tightens chairs, tables, desks, door hinges, and cabinets and lubricates when necessary
Replaces castors
Cleans grease traps
May check temperatures against pre‑established settings
May clean strainers and boilers
May replace ceiling tiles and loose floor tiles
May spot‑patch walls
May replace washers
May repair minor leaks in toilets, drinking fountains, etc.
May attach shelving and put up bulletin boards, pictures, etc.
May clean motor housings, ducts and other mechanical equipment
May act as a relief person for other maintenance employees
May perform custodial functions as required
May move furniture
Performs related duties as required
Knowledge, Skill and Ability

Learn policies and procedures
Operate, care for and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work
Record keep
Minimum Qualifications Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience providing services for a facility that operates 24/7/365
Experience working in a healthcare environment
Experience with custodial duties
Experience with building and equipment maintenance
Holds a valid driver's license
Experience with trades such as Electrical, HVAC, Plumbing, Carpentry, Masonry, Painting
Special Requirements Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
Physical Requirements
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
A physical examination may be required.
Working Conditions
Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
May be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
