A fast-growing heavy civil construction and soil stabilization company is seeking a hands-on, highly organized
Controller & Business Operations Manager
to build and manage the financial, administrative, and operational foundation of the business. This role is ideal for a pragmatic leader who enjoys wearing multiple hats, creating structure where it doesn’t yet exist, and partnering closely with ownership during a critical growth phase.
In this position, you will own core accounting and financial operations while also overseeing key business operations that keep projects, people, and assets moving efficiently. You will play a central role in establishing scalable systems, improving visibility into financial performance, and supporting informed decision-making across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee daily and weekly cash management and cash flow forecasting.
Maintain accurate general ledger structure and ensure GAAP compliance.
Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
Prepare financial statements and support tax filings, audits, and external reporting.
Maintain loan schedules, lease accounting, and fixed asset depreciation.
Implement internal controls and continuously improve accounting systems.
Partner with ownership on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable
Ensure timely and accurate vendor invoice processing and payments.
Manage AP aging and resolve discrepancies.
Oversee customer invoicing, billing packages, and supporting documentation.
Track receivables and follow up on outstanding balances.
Maintain vendor files including W-9s, insurance certificates, and compliance documents.
Process weekly payroll and ensure compliance with wage and labor laws.
Maintain accurate timecards, reimbursements, and employee classifications.
Post payroll entries and track labor, equipment, and job cost allocations.
Human Resources & Employee Administration
Manage onboarding, employee files, and compliance documentation.
Assist with recruiting coordination, job postings, and interview scheduling. Track PTO, attendance, and employee records.
Coordinate workers’ compensation claims and reporting.
Equipment, Fleet & Asset Management
Maintain equipment and fleet master lists.
Oversee registrations, DOT compliance, and preventive maintenance schedules.
Track utilization, insurance coverage, and asset documentation.
Insurance, Risk & Safety Administration
Administer work comp, auto, liability, property, and inland marine policies.
Track renewals, endorsements, and claims.
Maintain safety documentation, OSHA logs, certifications, and incident reports.
Project & Operational Support
Create and maintain project financial setups and job folders.
Support project managers with cost analysis, reporting, and billing data.
Assist with job budgets, cost codes, and operational reporting.
Technology, Systems & Administration
Implement and manage accounting, project management, and timekeeping systems.
Develop SOPs for workflows and maintain organized cloud-based documentation.
Manage corporate filings, licensing, and compliance documentation.
Prepare reporting for banks, bonding agents, and auditors.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration (CPA preferred).
5+ years of experience in construction accounting and operational finance. Strong working knowledge of GAAP, job costing, and project-based accounting.
Experience with accounting and project management software.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and process-driven.
Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, startup or high-growth environment.
Clear communicator with the ability to partner closely with ownership and field teams.
