Job Summary:

Provides technical scrub skills in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists the surgical team as needed. Must be energetic and highly motivated to support the success of Saint Louis University Hospital.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements Position Accountabilities and Performance Criteria (% of time):

Demonstrates professionalism when working: (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) – 70%

Performs care for patient safety and well‑being.

Able to scrub any procedure in the primary cluster skillfully.

Able to operate all equipment in the primary cluster.

Demonstrates ability to operate computer and perform correct data entry.

Follows established standards of practice.

Demonstrates flexibility.

Demonstrates knowledge and participates in specialty area.

Maintains certification (when appropriate).

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and interdepartmental objectives and maintain good employee relations – 10%

Cooperates with other departments and their needs in the interest of patient care.

Works closely with ACU and PACU and assists them when requested.

Safety/Infection Control: Practices according to safety and infection control policies – 5%

Practices universal precautions and disposes of hazardous waste per established guidelines.

Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees.

Maintains clutter‑free environment.

Keeps conversations and background noise to a minimum.

Adheres to dress code.

Reports risk‑management concerns.

Assumes responsibility for completing all annual mandatory requirements: Safety/Fire, Blood Borne Pathogen, Hazardous Communication, TB, Department‑specific, Age‑appropriate care.

Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.

Demonstrates care and courtesy.

Provides prompt, respectful, courteous service.

Meets physical, spiritual, psychological, and emotional needs of patients and families.

Job Specifications:

Minimum Education:

High school graduate or equivalent (preferred).

Minimum Experience:

Prior OR experience or graduation from an approved surgical technician program (preferred).

Required Registry or License:

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST).

Working Conditions:

Must travel to and between operating rooms rapidly; may be required to wear protective clothing; regularly exposed to risk of blood‑borne disease; must work with electrical equipment; may be exposed to hot/cold materials and chemical agents; may be exposed to latex; must have good organization, planning, reasoning, judgment, problem solving, and safety awareness skills.

Physical Requirements:

Adequate ability to sit, stand, walk, transfer adult patients requiring maximal assistance, carry equipment, manipulate wheelchair, stretcher, OR table; tolerate reaching, bending, squatting; read/write; communicate; manual dexterity and mobility; lift 50 lb and push/pull 100 lb.

Required Professional License and/or Certifications:

Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) – American Heart Association (AHA)

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) – National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)

Or Tech in Surgery – Certified – National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Or National Registered Surgical Technician (NRST) – American Allied Health Association (AAH)
