Active Kentucky Registered Nurse (RN) license, Temporary Work Permit (TWP), Provisional License or active compact state RN license in good standing and American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider valid for at least 6 months after employment date Physical & Work Conditions
The essential functions include the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 50-100 pounds daily and 25-50 pounds frequently; stand, walk and sit for long periods. The work may involve exposure to communicable diseases, hazards of radiation, and injury from intractable patients or sharp instruments. Shift
Must be able to work three, 12-hour shifts per week from 7pm until 7:30am; may include some weekend and holiday work. Job Summary
Registered Nurses in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Kentucky Children’s Hospital provide care for critically ill children from newborn to 18 years old. Patient conditions include recovery from major surgical procedures and life-threatening medical conditions as well as traumatic injuries. The PICU is a 12-bed unit offering family-centered care and open visitation for patients’ immediate family members. The RN serves as an important component of the critical care team, responsible for stabilization and ongoing care of critically ill children requiring constant observation, timely interventions, and/or invasive monitoring. The primary responsibilities include providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient-centered care which encompasses assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties for Nursing Care Technicians; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations. The environment supports collaborative efforts among nursing staff and physicians to improve communication and outcomes, utilizing the nursing process within a comprehensive patient-centered plan of care. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of Maslow’s eight Basic Human Needs and Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns Frame Work and Swanson’s Caring model; strong direct patient care and critical thinking skills; basic computer navigation and internet familiarity; professional and respectful communication with patients, families, coworkers and physicians; strong organizational, prioritization, and delegation skills; motivation, proactivity and confidence in advocating for patients and families; enjoy teamwork and open, honest communication; strong technical skills and ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
