Required Qualifications

Education : ADN (Associate Degree in Nursing)

Experience : No experience required.

Preferred Education/Experience : BSN and at least one year of RN experience preferred.

Licenses & Certifications : Active Kentucky Registered Nurse license (RN), Temporary Work Permit (TWP), Provisional License, or an active compact‑state RN license in good standing plus an American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support certification valid for at least 6 months after employment.

Physical Requirements The essential functions for this position include the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull 50–100 pounds on a daily basis and 25–50 pounds frequently; stand, walk, and sit for long periods of time. The conditions of work may involve exposure to communicable diseases, radiation hazards, and injury from intractable patients or sharp instruments.

Shift Must be able to work every weekend: Saturday and Sunday two twelve‑hour shifts from 7 am – 7:30 pm OR 7 pm – 7:30 am. This position is a Weekend Premium Plan—work 24 hours per week and receive 32–36 hours pay plus full benefits each weekend. Applicants are required to adhere to WEPP nursing policy NU09‑07.

Job Summary The pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is a 4‑bed intensive care unit adjacent to a 12‑bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Nursing care is provided to critically ill children and adult congenital cardiac surgery patients. Care includes, but is not limited to, children with congenital heart disease, acquired heart disease, and broad ranges of critical and chronic medical conditions. Patients range in age from the neonate to adult. The primary assignment will be in the CICU with the PICU as the secondary unit accommodation in the event of volume fluctuations.

Primary responsibilities include providing total, comprehensive, continuous, and patient‑centered care: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties for Nursing Care Technicians (Nursing Assistant); and adhering to university policies and procedures as well as federal, state, and local regulations. The environment supports collaborative efforts among the nursing staff and the team of physicians to increase communication and enhance expected patient outcomes.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities The ideal candidate will have knowledge of Maslow’s eight basic human needs and the priority within Gordon’s Functional Health Patterns Framework, as well as Swanson’s Caring model; superb direct patient care and critical thinking skills; basic computer navigation skills and working knowledge of the internet; ability to communicate in a professional and respectful manner with patients and families, co‑workers, and physicians; and strong organizational, prioritization, and delegation skills. The candidate will be highly motivated, proactive, confident in advocating for patients and their families, and enjoy working in a strong team environment with open, honest communication with staff and physicians. The candidate should also possess exceptional technical skills and a proven ability to work independently and in a team.
