Description Of Work This position is responsible for first-line supervision of Correctional Officer I’s in a minimum-custody facility. The Sergeant leads custody staff, assigns lower-level staff, oversees officer activities and performance, ensures custody, security and welfare of inmates, arranges work schedules, implements operational procedures, and upholds policies and regulations. The Sergeant may serve as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) and reports to a Correctional Lieutenant I and/or a Correctional Assistant Superintendent.
Responsibilities
Provide first-line supervision to Correctional Officer I’s.
Assign staff to areas or posts and monitor performance.
Maintain custody, security, and welfare of inmates.
Arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage.
Implement operational procedures and enforce rules, regulations, and policies.
Serve as Officer‑in‑Charge when necessary.
Report to Correctional Lieutenant I or Assistant Superintendent.
Management Preferences
Thorough knowledge of overall operation of correctional facilities.
Thorough knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, rules, and regulations associated with the control and management of inmates.
Applicants must pass a background check.
Minimum Education And Experience High School or GED diploma and two years of experience as a correctional officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
