Overview The purpose of this classification is to operate a transit system bus to safely transport passengers on an assigned route as directed. Drives transit system bus to transport passengers along assigned route; observes traffic safety rules; maintains transit schedules. Greets boarding passengers; collects fares and transfers; ensures passengers enter and exit bus safely; provides information/directions; maintains order on bus; assists elderly and passengers with disabilities as needed. Performs pre-trip inspections; sweeps bus daily and empties trash cans; fuels bus as directed. Prepares accident reports, vehicle maintenance reports, and incident reports; maintains accurate passenger count; submits to supervisor. Responds as appropriate to emergency situations or vehicle breakdowns. Consults with other operators regarding transfers. Operates two-way radio to provide information or receive advice/direction.

Responsibilities

Operate a transit system bus on an assigned route and maintain safety and schedules.

Greet boarding passengers, collect fares and transfers, ensure safe boarding/alighting, provide information/directions, maintain order, and assist elderly or disabled passengers as needed.

Perform pre-trip inspections, clean the bus (sweep, empty trash), and fuel as directed.

Prepare accident, vehicle maintenance, and incident reports; maintain accurate passenger counts and submit to supervisor.

Respond to emergency situations or vehicle breakdowns; coordinate with other operators regarding transfers.

Operate two-way radio to provide information or receive directions.

Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications / Requirements

High school diploma or GED required; two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving bus driving, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsements.

Data Utilization: Ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data/information; includes performing subsequent actions related to these computations.

Human Interaction: Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Ability to operate and control equipment and tools requiring complex and rapid adjustments.

Verbal Aptitude: Ability to communicate a variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations; may include counting and recording counts and basic measuring.

Functional Reasoning: Ability to interpret instructions and exercise independent judgment to modify methods to meet variations in objectives.

Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in evaluating information against criteria.

Physical Ability:

Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, including some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and may involve lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements:

Ability to perceive and discern colors or shades, sounds, odors, depths, textures, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks may require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors:

Performance may involve exposure to adverse conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature extremes, traffic hazards, violence, disease, or pathogens.
